Alittle Help with a '99 max :-(

Hello maxers, I have a 99 maxima, with about 140,xxx miles, and the cars giving me some problems.

Lets say i was driving and stopped at a stop light, the problem comes in when i again try to take off. its like the car is trying to take off in 2nd gear. Or like i was driving with a 300-400lb person in the back, but then it would get to normal after i get up to 30-50mph.

I know something crazy happened like this at one point, but then the car would barely want to move and if it stalled, it may have cut off. changing out the KS fixed this problem.

Im just trying to figure out what it could be, im not throwing any codes unless theres some that arent causing the light to go off.

Is your car jerking? It's a 99, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's a coil issue lol.

Don't get them NEW from EBay.

Get them USED from EBay. It's no different than getting used on here. I got mine on EBay and have had no problems after going through a bunch trying to fix my misfires.

is it literally trying to take off in 2nd gear? if so, maybe a tranny issue?

Could be a TPS issue...but he's saying he has no CEL's so who knows. I remember when I broke the plug on my TPS (my 97 Max) the car would shift like crap. It would go to like 5k and then slam into the next gear. I seriously thought the tranny was done. Turned out to be a busted clip on the wiring to the TPS.

OP...I'd get your codes checked just to be sure. Maybe there IS a pending code.

Try manually putting your transmission down in 1st gear. If it takes off fine all the time doing that then your tranny isn't downshifting to 1st all the time. If it still does it then the coil pack issue would be my first guess.

bhunter is saying instead of putting your car into drive put it into first, and see if it takes off fine

R N D D2 D1 <--- put shifter there, till time to upshift... R N D D2 D1 <--- move to here till time to shift again and finally R N D D2 D1... (basically shift it yourself (though once you move to D it will probably kick down and then settle out - be wary of your speeds at shifting, as driving an Auto this way it can take off MUCH faster than people that drive an auto are used to since your controlling the shift points.

Absolutely. I've been through like 3 sets before I found a used set that worked.

Used oem for the win ! Make sure you get em with under 100,000 miles on them and are NOT from a 99 or 2000 car.

I put 2 coils from autozone on my 97 over a year ago and they are still working fine.
No. the KS (knock sensor) is not the same as a coil pack.

Yeah the coils from 99 had somethin wrong with them. Hard to imagine AZ having bad stuff tho. I have never had a bad experience with them.

It's cheaper to get OEM used in good condition from a 95-98 car.

If the coils are bad then yes there will be significant power loss. With two messed up coils u running on 4 cylinfers instead of 6
