The block and heads are practically identical, but the intake is completely different and takes a different ECU.

The 99 engine is also a little different from earlier ones. there was a thread here 2 - 3 weeks ago about someone trying to swap a 99 short block into their 97 (?) and couldn't bolt on the older heads, manifold because of changes.

4th gen - vq30de - 190hp -
5th gen - vq30de-k - 222hp - newer and improved body from the 4th gen - lil more room
Engines can be swapped easily.
ECU are different due to the modifications made from the 5thgen
5thgen 3.0 manifold can fit on a 4thgen with a lil modification to the throttle body

pfffffff the fifth gen is not an improvementin body styling upon the fourth gen, at all. the fourth gen maxima and i30 are so much classier and better looking

not just imo, but officially released by nissan:

"sorry we fvkced that up for you guys, the fourth gen was better, we should have dropped the 3.5 in it before we made the stupid fifth gen bubble body."

Actually I own a 4th gen, they went haywire when they built the 6thgen. Instead of a sport cars they made sports boat. Egg gens..Bubble on wheels.

Agreed. I think Nissan just tries to make the max's as long as possible. Although it seems all new model of cars are getting longer and heavier.

New evo is bigger than old one.
New jetta's are bigger than old ones.

However, both of the old model of those cars are better. I dont get it.

But to get back on topic yeah the only difference is the intake manifold, interior, and exterior.

plain and simple buy a 4th gen and be happy for life with it,

but to answer your question 95-99 maxima same engine, same output, diff. is really that 99 they made it to have all the unnessary crap load of emissions,

00-01 maxima hihger output, more power and pretty much the same block, just diff gains due to electronically controlled manifold.

there's a reason why there is so much talk about swapping '00 intake (and all the guts 'n all) to the pre '00 engines.
There is also a reason why the '00 - '01 engines made 30 or so more hp, and a few more torques.
They are different. Slightly, but different.

(Wants an 00vi swap so baaaaad)

also, the 5th gen is overweight. some 200+ LBS. This is why a 00VI swapped 4th will blow a 5th out of the water.
