EGR Cost to clean.
EGR Cost to clean.
So my CEL went on two days ago. 3 months ago the codes were checked and a knock sensor code was thrown, ive known that needs to be replaced. So i checked it today, sure enough, knock sensor comes up, i know that doesnt throw the cel. But what did? The EGR Hi/Low Flow code.
Ive searched for how to's, I could do it, dont have the time. My dad will pay for it to be fixed at a shop.
I just wanna know ballpark EGR cleaning costs/replacement costs. Much appreciated.

It is a time consuming job, so let's break it down.
Let's say the shop charges $65 and hour
It is a 3-5 hour job(my estimate but sometimes you know shops like to take their time).
That's anywhere from $195 to $325. It could be even more.

you have lost your mind....i did it in an hour and change with about 10 to 20 bucks....get brake cleaner, some rags, some small pipe cleaner and wire brushes....remove it from the car and clean it. Most likely it will be black but should turn a goldish color after cleaning. SEARCH theres a write up on it.

I'm 17 and work 9-5 in a downtown office as an internship and am barley home durring the day on weekends b.c i hang out with friends. As i said, my DAD is paying, he doesnt mind.
Thanks Kev for the info, that seems a tad high, I'm gonna give them the code i pulled and tell them to take it out and clean it, and thats all i want.
Let me quote my post.... "Ive searched for how to's, I could do it"

Hey it could be less but it is always better to over estimate.
Usually the way to get it done cheaper is to find a shop that has done it before. If not they might charge you like so :
1 hour to remove im parts/area around
1 hour to clean
1 hour to reinstall
believe it or not the dealer has a service they do for this for like 135.00-165.00 depending on which one you take it too. call around and see what they're asking. and its egr, not erg....
And thats good to know I might call up my local dealer
Wow, a dealer will clean EGR guide tube.
I would be leeary to bring to a regular mechanic cuz they may not understand or know how to do the cleaning. U wd have to expain or even bring the writeup so the mechanic would understand.
I say either clean yurself or bring to a dealer if the price is right

Just read this thread that's listed in the How To's thread:

It's a simple time consuming task.
If you don't have the time then just go to a mechanic.
I changed my EGR and it was a pain. Always over estimate for time as things come up. The most time consuming part was hacking the end of the screw on one of the bolts so it would come off but after that it went fairly smooth. The dealer wanted to charge me almost $800 dollars, so I just did it myself.
Dropped it off at firestone today. Told them exactly what I wanted done, they quoted 2 hours on labor and a price of $190 to have the EGR tube and valve removed and cleaned. Not too bad.
$190 to clean both the tube and valve is a good deal, assuming they actually do the job right. I just finished this job, and I'd gladly pay $190 to have someone else do it next time. problem is, would someone else do as good a job? there's more to it than just cleaning the tube - you really should get inside the intake and clean that out too - that alone took me 45 minutes of digging and scraping with my fingernails, making sure to get all the little bits of carbon out so they don't get sucked into the motor, etc. I doubt a shop would do that. and then there's cleaning the IACV, etc. and I wonder how a shop would deal with the bolt that's too long to get the tube off...

I walked in told them the 2 codes and what they meant. Told them not to touch the knock sensor. Told them I wanted the EGR tube cleaned, mechanic took it out, by removing the entire intake so he ended up cleaning the throttle body and a few other parts as well. I also asked them to take the wires from the fogs I ran and tap them into my headlights wires for me. They did that at no charge.
