just deliberated over this question
my friend got a 2002 mustang gt. never drove a stick before and we let him drive ours, picked it up better than i did, but anyway, it came down to what he wanted, but he went with stick.
we told him that if the only thing that was stopping him from getting that was that he wouldnt be able to drive it well, go for it, hed pick it up fast enough.
also, arent standards more reliable, faster, better mpg, cheaper to work on than an auto trans... i think those are all accurate.
the guy selling him the gt said the autos were faster, but i think he was just flat out wrong or lying, anybody ever heard of that? for the mustang gts
also, standards are loads more fun. i dont live in the city city but i could see how that could get annoying.
let us know what you get.

Re: just deliberated over this question
Stick is fater on NON-TURBO.. Auto is faster on TURBOS.. The reason being that a turbo cars HP is produced at higher RPMS and in order to shift in a 5 speed you have to let off on the gas hence lowering your RPMS and loosing HP..
But non the less I do own a turbo Porsche and yes it is stick.. The control factor is well worth it..

i think it really depends on the your particular situation. if this max is a 2nd car, get a stick. it's a lot more fun. but, if you live in the a major metro area like me and this is your everyday commute car, get a automagic.
i've just spent 60k on a brand new bmw for my wife and i thought Wow! this car is going to so much fun driving...well, since i driver 30 mins each way from work and home in 5 mph traffic, i really didn't see the ultimate driving experience from this car. only time i get to cut lose is very seldom late at night. my point is, stick is not worth it if it's a pain 90% of the time and fun 10% of the time. ...this is my 2 cents.

Medic is right...
Both manual and auto can be made quite fast, however the manual will theoretically always be faster (with comparable modifications). However keep in mind that for some reason the fastest proven Maximas are AUTOS... Thanks Don in Texas.

well all i know is with the supra... the auto's build boost at 3000 rpms.. and the 6spd builds at 4000 rpms.. so the auto SupraTT's are faster to 140 than the 6spds..
you know i am beggining to wonder if 14 PSI is 14 PSI on some cars.. because i was in a passat with 19 PSI... and it was slower than my 97 5spd with bolt ons.. the thing was quick.. but it wasn't that fast.. and now the wrx has 14 PSI..but only 220 hp? who knows..

about the WRX
my friend with the stang gt alsdo looked at a wrx, at that point he wanted an auto. the company said they would have to special order it because they had only sold 3 this year. Reaon being that the auto compared to the stick was so slow. he suggested we drive the station wagon auto to get an idea. i guess it depends greatly on how well the auto tranny is built which varies from company to company.

My friend and I bought news cars the same week - he got an autobox domestic and I got the 5spd Max. We were driving side-by side at 40mph on a highway and he wanted to get into it. We both had a carful of friends. I counted down from three and just left him behind. Partially because his car was not as fast, but partially because I was in 2nd gear at 40, at about 4,200 rpm right at the tourque peak, just ready to instantly launch. He stomped on the gas and spent over a second waiting for his tranny to switch from OD to 2nd. :bawl: By the time he even started to gain speed I was almost 5 carlengths ahead and in his lane, signalling like; "Oh, I thought you wanted to race..."

I drove stick in England because British law considers people who learn to drive an auto as not fully qualified drivers. They even give you an special licence with a "AUTOMATIC ONLY" endorsement on it, kinda like the "UNDER 21" US licences. If you learn auto and want to drive stick you have to retake the test in a stick to prove you have finally figured out how to drive a real car. Don't flame me - I didn't write the law!
When I moved to the US and bought a car I couldn't even find a freakin' stickshift car, so I had to buy an auto. This was a 3.0 v6 and had the same 0-60 as the 4-cyl 2.1 5Spd VOLVO I left behind.
I visited England last year and rented a car - a stickshift Peugeot 306. 1.6 4-cyl - and it was faster than my '95 Ford Taurus because I know how to drive a stick properly. Much more fun to drive.
As soon as I got back to the US (ie less than 1 week) I traded the Taurus. I asked a few friends for advice on a car, and finally settled on the Maxima I wanted Fast, powerful, stick, understated, reliable and something I don't feel like I have to justify... "You have a Taurus?" "Yeah, but it was cheap, and it was on $9k when I got it at 18months old... Stop laughing. Please?"
Now people say; "You drive a Maxima?" and I say; "Sure do. And I love it!"
I actually liked the Taurus - it just wasn't powerful enough to make it feel like I was able to control it. The auto made it feel like I was supervising the car instead of driving it. Thing was, when I got the maxima I said to my wife; "I finally have a car that people won't ask me; Why did you get one of THOSE?"

A stock car does not always hold its boost, a WRX does not always run at 14 lbs, the stock ECU varries it based on a myriad of factors, so 10-12 is more likely, I've also heard that the auto on supra's and also RX7's are the only ones worth anything for a Turbo, and saw a passat with 20 lbs of boost with 0-60 in 7 secs and 1/4 around 14.5?????? funno whats up with that, the guy claimed he was putting down 260+ hp, makes me not wanna get a passat.............

Medic., you are the man! The question I always wanted to know but was afraid to ask! That's exactly how I feel. I've had stick shifts, to me it was WORK, not fun. Using both feet and hands - too much work and, to me, not as much fun. It just seems like it's going backwards in time/progression. To me a stick vs. an auto is like crank windows vs. power windows, getting up and changing the channel vs. clicking a remote, driving a screw by hand vs using a drill, handdrafting vs. autocad, etc., etc. To me, just plain more work. How is it more fun?
