okay i just ordered a y-pipe...

and looking at my VIN, my car says its a cali-spec. BUT, I have a 98 and I've heard cali-spec only applies to 99 or 99.5 maximas. I checked the stickies but i'd feel better if I got a personal response. PLEASE HELP since I have to change my order if this is a problem.

Vins don't lie.

Double check it.

AFAIK there have been cali specs since the introduction of the A32 maxima in 5/94, but there wasn't much of a difference until after a certain production date in 98 (Your production date x/97 if you have a 98) with the introduction of REAL pre-cats and swirl valves in the LIM for the cali-spec models.

Even if you ordered the Y-pipe and said it was for a 98 cali spec you should be fine....

Pop your hood, check for LARGE can on your front header, if it's there then well... I hope you ordered a cali spec y, if it's not there then don't worry.

Even if you did order the wrong one, warpspeed and cattmann are pretty good about shipping you a different one.

okay. yeah i figured that since dallas at warpspeed was very nice on the phone. Are there any signs besides the 12th character on the vin that would show me if its fed or cali?

Chances are that if you are a 98 model year that you're like 95% of 4th gens and don't need the special y pipe.

Only ones that require the shorter Y pipe are 99 Cali specs, all 95-98 Fed/Cali spec and 99 Fed specs use the same pipe.

And if you do have the precat in the front manifold, swap it out with a fed spec manifold. Its not difficult and will yield best gains.
