What year is your car? I had a similar problem a few months ago and it turned out that my immobilizer just died on me. Nissan introduced the immobilizer in Maxima's in 1999 as an anti-theft device. (Read more about it here) It sits underneath your dash, on the right hand side of the steering column. It's a black plastic box about 2"x3" and is attached via a metal bracket. It was manufactured by Siemen's and is virtually impossible to get in the after-market. You can buy a new one from the dealer in the $400 range. I shopped around local salvage yards and finally scored a working unit on my 3rd try. The best part is they only charged me $20. It worked fine after that. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Have it towed to dealership. Immobilizer has amnesia and needs to be reprogrammed to recognize your key. If you had a second key copied its what triggered your problem.

Are you serious? The Maxima came with a fuel cutoff for the alarm? I only thought the G4 and G5 Clifford alarms had this type of immobilizer.

As far as I know its not an alarm, just immobilizer. If the security light stays on with the ignition on, your car is disabled and won't start. The immobilizer is feature of the factory nissan security package and may be unique to the 99 model year and later Gens. There are numerous threads discussing it.

So this immobiliser cuts the fuel? Or does it cut the starter?

Fuel.

A starter cutout would be near useless on manual cars.

So, is there any way to bypass this immobilizer? This has happened to me at least twice since the year and a half that I've had my 99 SE.
