another "help im a lowering my car noob" thread
so ive had my car for 3 years now and have done pretty much everything you can do with the exception of lowering.....(yes stfu plz)
this is because of two reasons 1) i dont know **** about suspension and 2) it costs a fair amount.
so i have a few questions. first off i decided i want a 1.6/1.2 drop that is provided by the Htech springs (good decision?) so now i need some shocks to go with it right?
i was thinking tokico blues, but thats just some name brand recognition flowing out of my brain. is there a better deal? better quality?
i dont drive crazy. this is a daily driver car and i am going more for the luxury feel than the sport feel. id rather have a better ride than get an extra .2 inches or have an extra .0002 ms response time.
so h tech for the springs. and blues for the shocks? or not?
also, where should i be buying these?
i found the htechs at racinglab.com for 233 before shipping. that seem like a good deal?
where should i get the blues? how much should i be aiming to spend?
ALSO, will i need a camber kit or any other additional parts?
thanks.

Want comfort? H&R's with Illumina's are the way to go. Blues are stock replacements, don't lower the car on those.
Also, you won't need a camber kit but they're cheap anyway so might as well get one.

I can't find a comprehensive list of all of the drop springs for the 4th gen Maxima. A list would be great on how you state the comparisons.
From what I gather on the internet:
Spring Rate in (lbs/in).
H&R drops 1.4" Fr and 1.3" Rr.
Eibach drops 1.5" Fr and 1.3" Rr.
B&G S2 Sport drops 1.6" Fr and 1.6" Rr.
Sprint drops 2" Fr and 2" Rr.
KSport drops 2.2" Fr and 2" Rr.
Megan Racing drops 1.9" Fr(280) and 1.9" Rr(230).
Tein HTech drops 1.6" Fr(180) and 1.2" Rr(250).
Tein STech drops 2.2" Fr(200) and 1.8" Rr(280).
Tanabe Sustech drops 2.5"Fr(157) and 2.5" Rr(207).
Racing Guys drops 2.25" Fr and 2" Rr.
Are there any other springs to lower the 4th Gen Max?
Anyone care to comment on any of the above springs if they have experience with them?

adjustable are great if you have a lift and/or jack stands and can do it on the fly. not to mention the alignment is thrown out everytime. i will admit gr2's are a stiff ride, but not horrible as i've had them for 3 years now with maxspeed springs. allthough im used to them, i would love to have stock suspension back again for the softer ride.

If your car is an automatic do this:
Put a set of stock 5 speed springs on the front, it will lower the front end just enough so it sits even with the rear. Install Tokico Illuminas and set them up on 2F 3R. You will not believe how nice the car will ride and handle.

i ask myself this question every time i see a thread like this. if you are going to spend around $800 for new springs and struts why not buy full coilovers instead? you can adjust the height when and how you want and also possibly adjust the damper (i've seen coilover sets come with it for that price). IMO, if you still want your stock ride comfort leave stock height (or do what njmaxseltd said and put 5spd spings upfront). there is no sense of lowering your car with springs that pretty much give you unnoticable results. i say go with full coilovers that way you can lower it or raise it when and how you like.
i didnt know tanabe made lowering springs for the 4th gen, if i knew i would of bought those instead of the ksports.
oh, and from what i heard custommaxima.com makes lowering springs aswell 2.5F & 2.2R...

for coilovers. If you're dropping the car more than 2" then your ride quality will be garbage because of lack of suspension travel. Coilovers adjust height and dampening independently so you don't lose travel when you drop the car, so your ride will be as soft/harsh as you want it.

Im dropped on tokico blues and H&Rs Despite the Moncef and chris related comments i love the drop...going from stock GLE springs to this was a big difference and got the springs for $125 and the shocks for $260 installed them myself and have been happy. They ride nice, not too stiff and not boat like. kind of a mix between luxury and performance

im actually dropped on ksports and gr2s i like it i think its not to harsh and not too soft its got the perfect luxury sport sedan feel i just wish it was a little lower. oh i also installed subframe collars

hey chris, blow me ******. when i went to put on adjustable struts ( kyb-grx's) i was told that adjusting them would require a lift and that it might throw the alignment out a bit. you know $hit except how to ask mommy and daddy for money, or us.
#27
First of all, you don't need a lift to adjust them. For the front all you need is to pop your hood, for the rear just jack it up and take your wheel off (for AGX's).

I listed the comprehensive list that I made myself, as I wanted others to chime in on their experiences. Obviously the 2+" drop springs will give a very harsh ride. I'm not looking for a super lowered car.
You mentioned coilovers, which one would you recommend? Where can I get a set for $800?

Don't be mad at me because you don't know your ****, then listened to some idiot mechanic that didn't know his **** either. Next time do some research before buying things. Why buy adjustable struts when you don't know how to adjust them?

Ride doesn't suck at all, if you adjust them right way. With soft springs, you adjust the struts to be softer and vice versa. That's why I have mine set so stiff, I have stiff springs. I thought djfrestyl knew better than to say that you need a lift to adjust the struts.

Coilovers:
KSport Kontrol Pro Kit (504)Fr and (392)Rr.
Megan Racing (448)Fr and (336)Rr.
Tein Basic Damper (390)Fr and (340)Rr.
JIC Magic FLT-FAX (448)Fr and (336)Rr.
JIC Magic VIP (448)Fr and (504)Rr.
Nex GT ()Fr and ()Rr.
Ground Control *made by Eibach* ()Fr and ()Rr.
Ground Control's website has an option to specify desired spring rate. Not sure what ranges you can specify.

The first pic you have of your Max dropped, what springs are those?
I see the second pic you posted are of the stock springs, but that is too high for my taste.
I plan on installing a set of 17" rims.
Thanks for the pics!

I have S-techs with Illumina's, its low, its rough, feels like I don't even have a suspension much less a set of wheels attached to my chassis.
I run 5/5 stiffness all around. With my energy suspension poly's, my car feels great for racing but its absolutely horrible for everything else. I dodge potholes because I'm paranoid I'll blow my struts out with my drop.
I've considered running a softer dampening/rebound setting on the strut but I figured that would increase the likelihood of strut failure because the springs are so short (s-techs).
It's been about 2000 miles so far, I managed to get an alignment from a pro and I got within spec on camber without any adjustable bolts, the only thing out of spec is the rear toe (linkage shortcomings).

people get illuminas for the fact to run s-techs...although i'm not extremely dropped on s-techs..i run 2/2 all teh way around with no problems..when i have my stock wheels on, it feels better than factory, no BS
#38
Yeah, there's your problem. I'd set them to 1F/2R or 2F/2R (since that's what phatboislim has his set to and says its fine).
