Power antenna wiring issue
My antenna motor has been broken forever. Finally got around to ordering a universal kit, and installed it this morning. I'm having a strange issue with the wiring, however. There are 3 wires-- one ground, one constant +12V and one switched +12V which goes hot when the radio is turned on (bose). I verified these all with a multimeter before I soldered the connections to the antenna motor. For some reason, when I actually complete the circuit with the antenna motor, the constant +12V wire still reads correctly, but when I turn on the radio, the trigger wire only reads about 2.6 volts... not enough voltage to trigger the antenna to extend.
When I cross the constant +12V and the trigger wires, the trigger gets its 12 volts and the antenna goes up, and shutting off the radio makes the antenna retract just like it should. Being the genius I am, I thought that since the trigger wire reads +12V when not wired into the antenna motor circuit, I could just wire that up to a 12V relay and send the 12 volts from the constant wire to the trigger on the motor when I turned on the radio. I came to find out that putting the relay in the circuit made the voltage again drop to 2.6 volts...
Any ideas why putting anything other than a multimeter on the 12V trigger wire causes the voltage to drop to 2.6V? This is becoming really frustrating.
