To Buy or Not to Buy!

Found a Max for my bro, its a 98 137k on the clock guy is asking $3200. It starts up fine idles smooth tranny shifts smooth ...
needs tires and brakes all the way around, some random suspension parts probably do inner and outer tie rods and there are a couple of oil leaks i want to try and identify.

i couldnt see under the car well (will be going back to take a better look) but leaks are as follows:

both valve covers, on the side of the engine at the water pump / water outlet hose. (i believe it's oil not water not 100% tho) and i could see oil on the front side of the oil pan not sure if its the same leak as i couldn't get under her very well.

Well it seems a bit pricey, if you can get it for cheaper go for it

i agree i was looking to pay 2500-2800 IF the oil leak is a 5 10 min fix not the timing O-rings problem if its a big job my bro will wait for the EXACT max he wants then consider fixing one that has issues...

lol ... thanks man

I didn't want an auto VS 5spd debate

I understand the differences i dont think he'll rule out a 5spd or auto at this point.

That's way too much for what it needs. I got my fully loaded '96 SE with 84K miles for $2500 and all it needed was for the brakes to be re-greased and to fix the leak in the flex pipe.

$3200 is too much for all that needs to be done, and it's a high mileage base model.

From that pic, it looks like the timing cover or the front valve cover gasket. How is the gasket in the front? More pics??

no more pics ... both front and rear valve covers were leaking i could also see oil on the front side of the lower oil pan but i couldnt see up any further to see if it was the same leak

what would cause the leaks? my is also a 98 more miles and its dry...

Common oil leaks are timing cover o-rings, valve covers, upper oil pan gasket, crankshaft oil seal, rear main seal and oil pressure switch. From the sounds of it, you would have to completely change all seals on that engine. For that price, if you are willing, then go for it.

Well if you guys can do it yourself and have a garage to do all the work then go ahead but like everyone else here said, that price is too high...

Way too much in my opinion, my max might need a rad support and a ebrake cable but with 150k on a mint running motor and a very clean body for a NY car, I paid 500 bucks.
