Has anyone ever experienced a scraping noise coming from an axle before?

The left side in particular. I jacked uphe one side at a time and the noise it definitely coming from either the left axle or the left diff bearing inside the transmission. Axle boots are fine as I've replaced them just about a year ago.

The noise has just started but it sounded like it was coming from the transmission but running the right axle while having the right side of the car off the ground verifies there's no tranny issue from that side. When the left side is up, the noise sounds like it's coming from the inner side of the axle or diff bearing.

The tranny is original with 305k miles on it. Still shifts fine, no gear noises.

It's not the wheels bearings because they're quiet and the noise is not constant. It's more intermitant with variations in noise level as well.

I need to find my damn stethoscope!

A friend with a boosted 5th gen just had the inner CV bearings get destroyed by a shim inside the axle. It was only a month old too. I'm not sure what noises it is making but if you post up a video, I can tell you if it sounds similar to what we were experiencing.

Interesting, I'm on Eibach's and I have no scraping sound. Definitely get a vid up ASAP.

So, I found out that it must be my left diff bearing or something to do with the diff. I decided to change out my left axle (lifetime warranty Advanced axle) to see if the noise would go away and it didn't.

Now to find a decent used tranny to have swapped in.

Any update on this? I have a similar scraping noise that is most notable when engine braking. I only get it with the clutch engaged and the car in gear. It goes away when I push in the clutch or coast. I'm hoping it's a lose heat shield, but it could be the diff bearing too.
