ABS on a 1995

Howdy all.

I recently got a new job where I have to drive to work in mucho stop-and-go traffic. In today's mild rain I accidentally ran into the back of someone at about 2 mph but it got me to thinking about my ABS.

Its never worked as long as I owned it (bought in 2007) but I'm thinking that given I'll be driving much more in the near-term it might be worth trying to get it back in working order. I haven't yet done the code pulls to see what is actually causing the ABS light to come on but I'll do that shortly. That should be fun, it looks easy but those are the things that always throw me.

I was jsut curious if anyone ahs experience with ABS on a 1995 and if there were any issues/fears I should have. I'm guessing it was one of the first years to have ABS and I'm jsut wondering if this is a worthwhile (i.e. worth the $$$ and time) effort or if I should just go to a shop/dealer to get it all working again? Ar ethere any chronic ABS problems on a 1995?

Or just scrap it all together and just drive like an overly cautious 80 year old woman.

Anyone done repairs on ABS on a 16 year old car before? LOL

Not sure what your problem is. I have a 95SE, 5-speed,that I have owned since day 1 and have never had a problem with the ABS brakes. Mind you I can count the number of times on one hand where I have needed them.

Given my car is a 5-speed I try not to use the brakes if I don't need to. Consequently, at 84,600 mostly highway miles I still have the front brake pads and they have a lot of life in them.

I only replaced the rear pads a few years back because I froze the right caliper as a result of not using the parking brake for about 5 years.

The first thing I would do is stop driving aggressively in traffic. Secondly, try and find out what the problem is.

LOL

Oh I wasn't driving aggressively. Didn't even crack a plastic bumper for that matter.

I don't think 85K miles synchs up well with what I'm driving. Mine has to ahve double to triple those miles (odometer has been broken for years).

Mainly I was just looking for caveats/suggestions for early 4Gen cars with ABS since usually when something new is introduced the first 2 years work out all the kinks.

abs at that speed wont trigger. the sensor only picks it up if you slam the brakes and the cars still rolling. my 95 abs did kick in at a slow speed like that once, i think rain fools it a little bit. i also have like 210,000 miles.

Good to know

I'm pretty sure ABS is a secondary issue but I always start of with grand dreams and then work backwards to what's feasible/affordable.

For instance, I know I have a relatively bald front tire and probably some mildly worn out front brakes (car dives a decent amount when braking hard) but I'm always trying to make the Max be all she can be.

To answer your question, the ABS system does not have any common problems and is very easy to diagnose and get back up running. I am pretty sure its wheel sensors that need to be replaced.

i know this doesnt pertain to a maxima but my girl used to have a s3 and the abs light came on one day. i was driving and hit the brake and the pedal bounced back. it was really weird and hard to stop.

turns out that the brakes - im unsure if a maxima is the same way - run off the abs. since her abs sensor was failing her brakes were as well.

we had the sensor rebuilt for 100 bucks because a new sensor was more than a new MAF for a maxima.

id check the abs sensor.

How many wheel speed sensors are there on a 95 Maxima? I just bought one for my daughter and noticed that the abs light comes on once I start to drive it.
