Wheel Bearing Pricing

Hey Guys,
Just a quick question. I just got a qoute from a shop to replace both wheel bearings. He qouted me at $2,000... to me that sounds insanely high due to pricing from auto zone or napa being at 30-50 dollars a bearing. i was expecting around 500 total. Am i wrong? thanks for your input guys

depending where you're located you could get it done for less than 500.

I was quoted $300 to do one.. Run far and fast from any place telling you 2 large to change wheel bearings.

Yeah that sounds ridiculous. Just go into a shop and tell them what you need. Tell them what other places said they could do ($300 for one), but that seems a little high too.

Shop labor at around $60/hr and no more than 3 hours---$180
Bearing--$40
Materials--$20
=$240+tax>>~$260

hope you can find a shop that won't try to rape you. i'd pay no more than 350 for both around where i am...but there are so many shops around here its not a fair comparison. good luck

the ONLY WAY I could see that being a possible price is if you drove your bearings to utter destruction, breaking the housing and fusing it into your knuckle, which would require replacement. Assuming that you did it to both sides. Even then...2 g's?? gtfo. just go buy another one

It's like a 3 hour job for any mechanic, maybe 4 if they're slow. $2000 lol. I think he added an extra 0 on there, or he was quoting you for replacing the wheel bearings, your engine, and your trans. lulz

Have your ball joints done at the same time. I paid around $40 each for the parts and any competent mechanic can change each side out in 10 mins, so maybe one extra hour of labor cost. I think its totally worth it since you will be torn down that far anyway.

balljoints in 10 minutes?? ok, i've changed 3 maybe 4 ball-joints now. If some guy can get it done in under 30 minutes... share your secret.

For $300, you could buy a shop press and do it yourself. And best of all, you get a new tool in the shop to play with.

That is absolutely insane, wow... go back and tell them to fck themselves for insulting you. if you can remove the knuckles urself ul save a ton..if u have a pepboys or carquest around you id take the knuckles there, i paid 25 per bearing and 35 per knuckle to have the old bearings pressed out and new ones pressed in...so a grand total of 120 isnt too bad..

i believe they qouted me 200 for both side ball joints and bearings, never went back due to my tranny blowing up lol.
