Headlight Lenses

I notice two clips on top of each headlight assembly. I removed the clips thinking you could remove the lens to clean. The lens looks like it's glued on. What are the clips for?

Re: Headlight Lenses

There are 5 clips. remove all. Using a heat gun, heat the complete edges of the lamp. Get it HOT to the touch. Carefully using two flatblades pry lenz away. CUT the glue with a razor knife as you go. This glue is like nothing else you'v ever seen. To reassemble heat the glue to HOT. Using a plastic knife/popsicle stick ect...smooth out the glue in the channel. Reheat glue to hot also heating the glue surface of the lenz. No need to use any additional glues, you have not removed any product and heat revitalizes this stuff. Push lenz back in place and reinstall clips. Use caution when cleaning inside. VERY easy to scratch mirror surface. Use hot soapy water, dry with heat gun and your wifes best kitchen dish towel.

The clips are on there to provide some mechanical fastening. The adhesive used to glue the lens, as strong as it may be, will still creep and cause the lens to shift. The clips, made of steel, provide the positive retention needed to secure the lens. Remember to put these clips back on when you re-assemble your headlamps. You might also want to bend them a little before you snap them back on for they might not fit as snuggly.

I had to clean out my headlight from a bulb that exploded.

I got fed up with the Heat Gun, and stuck the light in the oven for 10 minutes at 250 degrees.

Came apart like butter, and went back together even better.

Of course, DON"T forget you have it in the oven...use an egg timer or something!

I wouldn't try this with taillights however, as the lenses are plastic, and headlights are glass.
