ECU removal

I have a 97 GXE, manual heat controls, auto trans car.

I am having a problem where the heat is on all the time and I cannot reduce the temperature. This is not a fan problem, the fan works as it should.

I thought I had a heater control problem where the temperature slide lever did not work but another control panel from the junk yard did not fix the problem.

So now I am trying to get to the Air Mix Door Motor. My problem is the ECU is in the way. So my question becomes - how do I take the ECM out. I can't figure it out. I can see Philips head screws that seem impossible to get to and I can see 10mm hex bolts that also seem impossible to get to. Can I remove the ECU with the harnesses attached or do I need to take those off first?

Can anyone give me directions? Thanks.

It's been a while since I messed with the ECU the 10mm bolt is hard to get to on the back of the ECU but can be done a 1/2 turn at a time with a 1/4 inch ratchet with a 2 inch extension. I would disconnect the wiring harness and remove the ECU to get the room you need to get the ECM out hope this helps you out.

Those impossible to get to screws/bolts, those are the ones you use. Have fun. It's a pain in the ***. Enough so that I never put my ECU back in it's proper place after removing it. No need to brush up on cursing, you'll get plenty of practice while you're messing with the ECU lol
