Squealing under Hood

There is a mild squealing noise coming from under my hood. Funny thing is it only makes this noise once every few drives. I am assuming this is some sort of belt that needs to be replaced. What belt will I inspect and most likely replace?

Thanks.

In my reasearch, I am coming across the term "Serpentine Belt". Is this what I am looking for?

Most likely the squeal is coming from a belt that has loosened up over time or worn out. We have 2 belts on our cars.

Here's a link on how to check them. Search and you will find a how to on replacing them.

Could also be the idler/tensioner bearing squeeling. I've found a bearing that can be pressed into the old wheel for $2.70 +free shipping on the bay.

A belt is the most common, but bearings can do it. My car developed a squeal and it turned out to be the altenator.

The alternator how? cuz im having a loud squeeling noise when of course start the car and sometimes driving. I tried tighting the belt but not powering steering belt. How you found out it was the alternator? Its getting annoying as hell.

im having the same problem...it only developed once i installed my 1000W amp and subs, im assuming my problem is my alt, but the easy way is to check tension on both belts, and, even thought ill catch hell for this, i used a little 800 grit sandpaper to treat the belt(s)(de-glaze it(them))

Sounds like belts. Either need replacing or to be tightened.

update!, replaces battery terminals, and tightened the belt, and the squealing stopped, also discovered my battery was cracked badly and the one cell had gone dry, all in all, i believe that the belt tightening did the trick
