How accurate are the ECU error codes?

My dads 95 max was having problems and I told him how to check the ECU error codes. He gave me the codes and I told him what the error code diagnostics said. It said that he was having a problem with the engine temperature control sensor. So he went to the nissan dealership to buy the part and happened to talk to one of the guys he knows that works there and the guy said he didnt think that was the problem and that he should talk to one of the maxima expert mechanics that was there that day. Well the mechanic told my dad the same thing about it not likely being the problem and said to try it but that it probably wasnt going to do anything. My dad got the part and put it in himself and the check engine light hasnt come back on and the car seems to be running great. The problem with the car was that it was stalling once in a while at speeds between 40-60 mph and sometimes at idle. SO i'm wondering how accurate the ecu codes are, cause I havent had any problems with my max yet(knock on wood).
