Just Got a 4th Gen!! go Me!

Well Ive been a member here for SEVERAL years because ive ALWAYS wanted a Maxima since I was maybe 16. Well I couldnt afford a 4th gen when i got my 1st car and didnt try when I got my second. But here I am car number three and owning the car I wanted in the first place!!!

its a 99 SE 5 Speed 130k paid 3200$ for it...Quite effing proud of myself...

Background....1st was a 93 Probe GT that i bought just cuz i wanted to be driving something. The one i got for 1500 had a drivers door that had a collision so the thing was dented and window did not work. EVERYTHING else about that car was great except it was old 267k when i bought it. Then I got a 1997 Buick Regal GS that was fun at first since it had more size and was faster than the Probe., But it turned out to be a major PITA. It stopped running again about 3 weeks ago and I had decided on day 3 that I wasnt fixin it.

So I promised myself that I would be being ONLY something in this catergory 1. 4cyl 2.NO premium requirement 3.manual transmission 4.A+ reliability record. So my only three that I liked were 97-99 CLs, 90-97 accords, and B13 and B14 Sers. But everyday i was looking at Maximas and finally went and drove one and WOW!!!!!!!!

Not a bad start! Looks to be in good condition but I think you over payed just a little like you did on the Probe.

Either way at least you're happy you got your Maxima. Get some coilpacks ASAP.

Congrats on the purchase. Chrisman may be right about you overpaying a little, but it is not enough to worry about. Looks like it is in great shape. Good luck with whatever you plan on doing to it.

You are probably right. I just felt i could not pass this mechanically and cosmetically [almost] perfect car. My last two cars LOOKED like something that belonged to a poor college kid so maybe i have a bit of a complex!! lol

And ive been searching trying to find out if coil packs are a hard diy and how much it will cost... any help??

one thing to check on the coil packs are if its arcing. if just the lower half (the boot) is cracked, you can pick up the lower half from autozone or napa for around 12 bucks, instead of buying a whole coil for a lot more.
the bose head unit, your probably going to want to change that out anyways, after all it is what a 14-15 year old radio. for the car remote, yes you can buy a used on off ebay and sync it. for the the radio trim and shift boot, there are people on here selling those parts for cheap. good luck on your car

BTW GREAT post!!

I havent looked to see if the coil packs actually need changing, I was just going off the suggestion that ChrisMan287 made. Is this an item I should just change anyway, broken or not?

As far as the radio, it may not be something that i do immediately so im hoping to fix it for the time being (~1 month).

As far as the shift boot, from looking at pictures i think the only problem is that it is outside of the piece that holds it in so this should be a 30sec fix.

Again THANKS for a great post

i suggest swapping for 05-06 pathfinder bose HU 6 disc MP3 and a picking up a aux in for it.

That's what i did and i love the setup great sound you don't have to deal with trying to match stock amps or replacing them. also it looks stock so there's less chance it'll get stolen.

Rip that "wood grain" bezel off...looks like turds and the regular plastic dash matches the rest of the interior better

White and black are the absolute best colors for 4th-gens, and yours looks pretty dope. It sounds like you learned what everyone learns about Maximae - they're old, they're cheap, but they're really a step up from the other Japanese midsizers from that era.

CONGRATULATIONS!

Also good news for 4th gen owners is I'm noticing an abundance of parts at the pull it yourself salvage yards.. I bought a fender in perfect condition for $50 a few weeks ago. I can't believe how much fun the 5-speed can bring.

Yea the price didnt bother me so much because the car is CLEAN and because my last two cars have been < CLEAN...Plus virtually every other car i was looking at had 180k+ on it. And this (or an e36) is the car I wanted to have ever since I thought about having a car.

You are liek the 3rd person in this thread to tell me to get rid of the wood ...And call me crazy but i actually like it. Well I like in the center, it will likely be removed from other places on the interior.

AND YES....this even feels way better than any Accord or camry I have driven...SOLID and Smooth.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Ive been going through the FAQs and How-Tos pretty constantly trying to get more of a feel for what im trying to do!

And I posted a very similar thread over on The Car Lounge (I go in through VWVortex since forums.thecarlounge.com does not work anymore) and I can only laugh at some of the comments that were made about me actually being excited to own a 99 maxima....from a bunch of people that think that a MKII Golf is an AWESOME car and that the e30 is God's Chariot (which may or may not be true). But yea SOME of them are ridiculous.

/rant

Thanks for the welcome

I just bought white GXE last week, 120K stick. Changed spark plugs (the rear 3 plugs were pretty deep, I had make a tool to get them out), Oil and air filtert. Also mounted new sets of wheels.

Only tree problems
Windshield fluid would not spray - I hear the motor running, but no water. I already drove paper clip deep into the holes but still not working

Crankshaft front oil seal leak

When fueling, gas pump would continue to pop. My guess is clogged venting line

Also, be careful about jamming things into the w/w nozzles. You can inadvertently damage them. Instead, pop 'em out and throw them in a vinegar/water solution for a couple hours. This should clean them out very well.

NYA! Welcome! Get that crappy wood stickers off the center. If you want the wood pull the OEM ones off a junked car they look a lot nicer. That stuff just looks cheap. Then you're off to the races!

First do all the maintenance and then ....
