Cold Weather Starting

Has anyone experienced any start-up problems due to single digit temps? The reason I ask is this morn my 99 felt like it's battery was dead. It took two tries and then started up with a weird smell.

When was the last time you changed your battery? It will struggle in colder temps if it's on its way out ... but that's just a bad sign of things to come.

It's been 8 months. The Starter and Alt were also changed out at the same time. I didn't realize it would cause that much strain on the battery.

What kind of battery? I hardly doubt it will get this cold until at east next winter down in ABQ again, so keep that in mind when purchasing your next battery.

Starting amps, temperature, etc. all play into the dynamics of that little turn over, especially at extremely cold temperatures.

Mine was slightly hesitant today, but not too bad. -10ºF.

yeah that sounds more like fuel pressure regulator. Do a search. there is a how to thread for diagnostic and replacement.

Basically if the car has trouble starting up from sitting overnight, but starts up easily if only sitting a few minutes, then your fuel pressure regulator isnt holding any more and its time for replacement.

There were subzero temps around here the last couple of days and I couldn't get my maxima to start for 2 days. New battery which had plenty of juice, that wasn't it. The engine would turn over and just occasionally sputter very briefly. After it warmed up a bit I was able to start it after some more serious tries. I could always smell ethanol so I'm betting it has to do something with the oxygenated fuel and the cold air temps.

Had the car 5 years or so and never experienced a problem like this.
