Not sure on how california smog testing works, (or any smog testing for that matter since I live in florida) but it is possible to complete a 3.5 swap without having a check engine light.

I also don't know for sure, but I would assume so if retained all the smog equipment, cats, etc.

You would have to register the engine swap through the state referee. Would have to pass smog and inspection before you can get the ok.

there are shops that wont really trip. i had a guy pass smog on a N/A chassi 300zx with a tt swap pass. a supercharged civic si pass without any paper work. i think if put a vq35 and keep the stock intake, and keep the engine bay looking stock, when he will check it, he will think its a stock maxima. i mean a vq30 and a vq35 look almost the same, except the intake manifold

Visual inspection may fail. As stated above it depends on who checks the vehicle. Technically without registering as such you 'should' not be able to pass. (Assuming they catch it.)

Obviously it would pass smog, how else would the 3.5 be on the road?
That said, I give +1 to using a Cali spec AND one with EGR.
Lastly, there are so many ways to get an engine that is properly maintained to pass smog it is stupid.

i think if you have a 95 with OBD1,they put it on rollers, so i believe once you have good catalytic converters on, you should pass. now if you have a 96+, they hook up a computer to it, so if you have any check engine light, you fail

Ill check tomorrow, the connector is under the left side of the glove box, ill take a picture.

As far as the smog stuff goes, if your check engine light isn't on and you pass the visual inspection, you'll probably be fine. I'm sure most smog techs don't even know a 3.5 doesn't come in a 4th gen anyways.

OBD1 OBD2 question?

Were 1996 and later years OBD2? Is the 1995 model obd1?

Motor swapping - Difference in OBD1 vs OBD2 ?

Non Obd-ii

are 1995 all OBD 2

You guys are mistaking the consult port as obd1 port when the port is on the passenger side.............. This has been covered quite a bit.............

Yeah i do kinda feel like a douch for changing the discussion a tad. But for all we know the op could of went out and bought a 95 solely for a 3.5 swap due to the fact that he thought it was obd1 and would have a better chance of passing emissions.

Unlikely? yes, But you never know. Is that reason why i corrected the statement about being obd1? NO. But misleading information is more hurtful then helpful, which happens all over the .org

SOOOOOOO back to the subject at hand. Yes it is possible to to a 3.5 swap without CEL's. And yes it will require some extra work and money to make it work and pass.

Im lucky that i dont have testing out here
