rubber seal around the trunk is probably ripped somewhere...open the trunk look for rips or tears in the seal or see of the trunk is out of line a little

that little offset is probably what is causing the issue..all that snow sitting on top melted a little and slowly filled up the spare tire area.

My man, you are going to be on a wild goose chase with this leak. I have been trying from since the past summer to find it and it is very difficult. I can give you some starting points..

One of my first leaks was coming from the latch in which part of the weatherstrip was not pushed in fully. Fixed

Second leak was from the top right side where the runoff for the trunk is. There is a seem where the metal joins. On the inside of the trunk, it was dripping from there after going to observe after a heavy rainstorm. Fixed with some silicone on the inside.

To this day, still leaks and I was not going to troubleshoot through the winter so I took out both plugs from beneath the spare and left it at that for now. Hope this helps.

If the water leaks in around a tail light, it can run along the inside edge of the trunk and not get the carpet wet. Take out the carpet and maybe you can see water tracks.

If you have to, take out all the inside trim panels and carpet. Get in the trunk with a light and have someone hose down the car from all directions.

I have actually cleaned the sealing area real good "trunk lid and seal" and put a light coat of vaseline on the rubber seal, then lightly close the trunk lid. Any where there is not vaseline transfer to the trunk lid is a suspect area.

If it was this easy, we would have fixed this issue by just going through a car wash and finding it. For some odd reason, only natural rain is when you see the leaks.

Its just an A32 thing. Maybe even all maxima's in general. Mine doesn't count because my lid is jacked up anyway, but my friends trunk leaks on his I30, and all the 4th gen maxima's and I30's in the junkyards have moldy carpets and stuff from leaky trunks.

This is exactly what I had to do when I change my taillights over to 01Se tails. Found a lake of water sitting where my spare tire went.
I used sealant all around the taillights where it met with the body. Ran water after it the sealant was dry ano more leaks.
You can try this. See if it work

Hmm, I did this also but mine is permanent because I used silicone to reseal both lights and I still have a leak. Hope that's the end of it for yours.

Most trunk leaks come from the tail lights not the upper lid seal. There's a channel deep enough that water never contacts the lid seal. That channel around the trunk drains right over the tail lights. There's your leak, and it's very common not only in Maxima's but on lots of vehicles.
