Hole in EGR Tube

so my check engine light came on. Autozone pulled the codes, P0400, the egr tube/valve. i know these things like to clog up a lot but when i took it to a shop they told me there was actually a whole in the EGR tube itself. has anyone had this happen to them? i wont be able to get to it to fix it for a while, you think it hurts anything to drive with it in current condition?

EGR's were added to cars to prevent the engine from backfiring when you took your foot off the gas at high engine rpm's. You can drive the car without any real problems other than the SES light.

Funny, I'm pretty sure they were developed as a supplement to emission regulations to circulate more NX into the engine to create cooler combustion temperatures. Must just be rumors

You dont need the EGR at all When the code comes up it usually means that it is clogged. I removed my EGR when i did my 00vi for simplicity. It only activates when your at part throttle not WOT. You won't need a new EGR tube. Just take the manifold off and scrape all the carbon off or remove the tube and clean it out. Or Just get an EGR temp sensor and plug it in place of your current one and dangle it behind the motor.

when i am cruising in 5th gear on the highway going about 80 and let off the gas to slow down, my car sometimes backfires. i have no codes. could this be an early sign the egr needs a cleaning? i have 150K and have cleaned everything BUT the egr

ya i think that there is a hole somewhere along the way, if you open the hood and give it a hard rev you can definitely tell there is some kind of exhaust leak back there. maybe a leaky gasket or something
