TRANSMISSION SOUND AFTER 5 SPEED REBUILD?!!!
TRANSMISSION SOUND AFTER 5 SPEED REBUILD?!!!
I recently had my 5 speed tranny fully rebuilt (synchros, bearings, seals, etc.) When I first cranked it up and drove it, it made a continuous sound (not a bad sound). A friend of mine who is a mechanic said that the sound is normal for a fully rebuilt tranny and it will eventually go away. So far I put 400 miles on the rebuilt tranny and the sound is still their but, its not as loud when I first drove it. I hear it in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. 4th and 5th I really cant hear it as much because of my loud exhaust. My question is when will this sound go away and is this normal after a rebuild?
Can you elaborate on the type of this sound? In my experience, when a manual transmission is making a constant sound in all gears it's do to something being too tight. Maybe the shop made some clearance level too small? Kinda a shot in the dark though...
Its more of a subtle whining noise when I drive in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
I was doing some research and I found this link, go to post# 135 http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...roblems-4.htmlI know I'm not the only one who has experienced this. My transmission shifts excellent and there is no leak. I need jtzmax or dgeesman (dave) to give me some true input on this.
That was gonna be my suggestion...did they use GL-4 gear oil. I got that synthetic gear oil from Valvoline Instant oild change and shifts are smooth and clean.
U sure noise is from tranny and not somewhere else?

Yes, there is a breakin period for a rebuilt transmission with new internal parts. I have a rebuilt auto and didn't experience any noise issues with mine just stiff shifting but it has smoothed out with about 10k miles on it.
I picked up the tranny from the shop, I installed my tranny and I used only GL-4 gear oil.
Im gonna say this...if u test drive a new car with MT, the shifts are smooth and the tranny dont make no noise. by that same logic, since teh tranny is rebuilt and "like new" then there shouldnt be any noise either.
I am thinkin that somewhere in the tranny isnt or wasnt lubricated when the tranny was rebuilt. The shop is not gonna rebuild the tranny again unless it breaks.
Jus keep driving it and break it in. Thats all u can do. UNLESS, its something else.

Did u clean the mating surface on the engine and tranny? Jus asking. Any startup issues?
Sup man!
Sounds like they pre-loaded the MS bearing too much. Too thick of shims, IMO. The sound you hear is the compression of gear on gear with little room for movement - making shifting stiff and also the noise. Either that, or they may have tweaked a shift rod while in there, bend one of those even a bit and it'll never be right again. Unlikely for that to happen, but hell - anything is possible. I'd be willing to bet that they didn't measure the pre-load and just reused the old shims in the bearing cups. If that's the case and they didn't order shims from Nissan, you got the shaft on your rebuild. Not much you can do at this point - hope it's got a warranty. Syncroz should be ok as long as you used GL-4, (GL-5 will eat the brass over time). The end result you'll find here will probably be something to the effect of - you'll be just fine for 30 - 80k miles and then it's time to rebuild again. lol (thank you Nissan!
) The noise will probably get softer with time but may never go away totally. You can sort of tell by the sound if it's IPS or MS bearings most of the time, or Diff. They all have their own unique sound to them. All of them not so good.
Hope this might help ... think you'll be fine really overall. Can you post a clip of the sound at all ??? Also, what - if you don't mind - did you pay for the rebuild? Drop and pick up ... no R+R at least that saved you some $$$.

Thx for dropping by and giving me your input on this, I greatly appreciate it! You know, I don't think they shimmed the bearings. The noise is slightly still there. As of today, there are 520 miles on the tranny and 1st - 2nd gear sounds like I have a R/C car or a Supercharger (whining sound)! I took my tranny to these guys because they have alot of experience with maxima tranny's, they have done numerous tranny's. They have so much experience with our tranny's, that it takes them 4-6 hours to fully rebuild one! I got the hook up on parts and labor from the owners of the shop ( the guys who rebuilt my tranny) for $450 w/ 6 month Warranty. I will be FIRE A$$ HOT (MAD)
if I have to drop this tranny again, take it to them to fix it (which is far), and be without a car. The tranny shifts like new and has no leak. I will try to put a sound clip on here.
Well, if it were me, I'd make the drive out there and let them listen to it, see what they say and maybe go from there. $450 is a good price (being that you r+r'd the thing) ... seems fair. You sure you put enough GL-4 in there? How much did you put in it? Hate to say it, but our trans axles are not that hard to rebuild. If they did syncroz too ... in 4 - 6 hrs, that's a bit rough to believe. You have to break down the whole shaft - all gears to get the new syncroz on. But ... as I said, anything is possible.
