Performance issues

Aight, so for the past little while I've been having an issue with my mpg being down to about 17mpg in the city. Now I was wirting it off due to my heavy right foot, but right now I did two back to back runs of 0-60 and unless my iPhone grossly lies, I got 9.8s best time. That can't be right.
When I just got the car, with ****ty stock size tires I had 8s time.

And I have an 00vi installed and running, and nice high performance tires.

Something isn't right here. Now, I got two codes: one for idle control valve I got a 5th gen once wired in, but it's just sitting in the engine bay and one for EVAP (which is hooked up - and should be running)

Can either one of those codes affect performance or mpg? And if not, what else can?
I keep my car well maintained all the time, regular oil changes, always on time, as well as fixing anything that goes broken.

Also, EVAP code, which part would throw that? I had the EVAP control valve accidentaly hooked up backwards and then started the car once, then reversed it right away, dunno if that might have damaged it?

AFAIK a nonfunctioning evap system shouldnt cause poor mpg or performance. Im running my DE-k swap the same way and can get about 385 miles (highway) a tank being heavyfooted.

How are you controlling VI? RPM switch?

Also IACV wont affect performance either. IACV's purpose is to even out idle on cold starts or when an extra load is put onto the motor (cooling fans, AC, etc). Aside from that, its pretty much just chillin.

If you want 0-60 times, go to the track.

That was an irrelevant statement....

Also, a few weeks back my hand brake light went on and won't go away. It temporarily turns off when I'm under heavy breaking but as soon as I accelerate it goes back on.

On sunday I'm going to try to look at as many things as I can, pull the codes, check the brake lines and the calipers to see if I have a sized one, and going to try to check the hand brake system on the rear wheels side to see if it's jammed up or something. Also going to pull a few spark plugs and check how they are looking.

Also, @VQ'rInWLA I have a Summit Racing RPM switch set for 4900 RPM. When I apply power from the battery directly to the VI I hear a swoosh kind of noise, so I guess the VI is running ok? Though will still look into it more.

it could be your knock sensor and one or both of your cam positioning sensors....when mine on my 95 max went my gas would just wither away and had poor acceleration....could be something else but once i fixed those problems felt like a new car

I checked the knock sensor when I was installing the 00vi and had easy access to it. It was fine.

However, cam positioning sensors? Will those throw a code or not? I'll look into the FSM and see if I can do some trouble shooting on Wednesday. Any tips off the top of your head would be appreciated.

In the mean time I have already figured out I have a small exhaust leak somewhere.

I met up with my dad today who also drives a '97 maxima (same year as mine) and noticed that his exhaust was a LOT quieter then mine. So, got lucky there. I suspect the leak might be around where the Y-pipe goes to the headers. As my y-pipe was removed when my tranny was changed. So i guess I won't be putting off that WS Y-pipe as I had planned on doing.

On many cars, low brake fluid in the master cylinder will light the parking brake light. Not sure if the Max does that, but you might want to check.

I still wouldnt count out the the KS. Put a resistor in to make sure that isnt the issue. Your sensor might be ok but the harness could be bad. At least you can count that out as a culprit for a temporary solution.

How do the plugs look?
What kind of plugs are they?
Have you checked the coils?
Most importantly what lower intake manifold are you using with what injectors?

You should be more specific in your setup. If your on 5th gen injectors id say 17-19 isnt to bad untuned. Also if your running that rich your setup isnt going to reach its full potential. If your using the 4th gen rail then totally disregard that

FWIW i had no ivac or evap and my mileage wasnt to bad(as long as i stayed off the pedal). But if you have a vaccum lead due to it(or somewere else), it could deffently be the issue.

Yeah for iacv.. didn't think about that, though wouldn't that just affect the idle and not the actually acceleration of the car? That's the only code

you need to do a tune up my friend, losing to a 4 cylinder camry is unrealistic

No it's the Camry is the v6 but still, the vq makes more power and is supposed to be a whole second faster
