Its the valet key, he must have a chipped 4th gen.

He has a 99 that uses the chipped key. Only a chipped key will start the car, the valet key will not because it has no chip. But the chipped key will open the doors.

I have no idea what this problem is. If he has road service with his insurance, call them or a locksmith.

go to your local nissan dealership. Hopefully you have either your registration or title with your name on it. Get them to make you a key. They'll be able to look up your vin and make you a key that way. If you have a 99, just ask for a key to be made without the chip since it wouldn't work anyways. btw, better make a spare for the one in the ignition cause you might be screwed if you lost that only one you have

Hold the unlock button down, if the fob is working the windows will roll down.

I have this same issue, the problem is that my key is warn out. The key will still start the car but i had to play around with it alot for the doors. Now that i know it will lock the passenger door and unlock the driver side. Your best bet is to spend the money to get a new key made or figure out how to wiggle that key around to unlock

Try the passenger door? can you get in through the trunk of a 4 gen? (fold down seats?)
wiggle the key as has been mentioned. the only one that worked perfectly on my 3 gen was the factory key. I lost it a few years ago and went to my copy, and it sucks. have to wiggle the key every time and eventually it'll work.

all else fails, you can pop the hood and replace the battery without getting into the car, but it's a pain.

Just bringing a little levity

On a more serious note, I dunno if the tennis ball unlock method would work on our cars, it's all over youtube, did see it in a movie too...

What has been done to try to repair the damage? How did they get in the car? If they tried to slim jim the driver's window, they could have messed up the wires on the door lock. Were all the fuses replaced? Broke the ignition off is kind of vague. Need more/better details.

back to the original subject, try jacking up the front of the car, removing the splash guards, and trying to pop the hood release from the inside of the hood. then you might be able to charge the battery.
