5spd leaking..

I have a 5 speed manual transmission that has been recently leaking. It is leaking from the driverside, driveshaft hole; I have replaced the axle shaft seal, then pushed the axle all the way in until it clicks in place and I gave it a nice tap with the hammer to make sure it's all the way in. I still have approximately 1/2 inch of space in between the axle and the tranny. Do axles come in different sizes for VLSD and standard open differentials? I also must have overfilled the tranny with approximately 5 to 6 quarts of 75w/90; please let me know any input.

The famous 5 speed tranny leak from the axle seals is usually a sign of failing diff. bearings.
How did you put 5-6 qts over in there? You should only fill it to the bottom of the fill port.
Get the access out of there by opening the fill port and let it drain until it stops. The level should be correct once that's done. If the leaking continues, you need tranny work.

yea diff carrier bearings, if you go underneath the car, see if you can wiggle the axle where it enters the tranny. If theres more than 1mm of deflection or movement when u wiggle it, the bearings are toast. either that, or your axle seals are toast.

yup. If the differential bearings are shot, its either rebuild or replace.

I know the axle is sitting approximately 1/2 inch from sitting flush against the tranny. I remember now when reinstalling the axle the shifter was in first gear; I left it in first gear by accident. Would this prevent the axle from sliding all the way in, even about 1/2 inch?

can you take a picture of the seal and how it's surface is compared to the surface of the trans (to make sure you didn't push the seal in too far which IS possible and would cause a leak).

the vehicle being in gear would not affect how far in you can push the axle.

was it like this (1/2" out) before you took the axle out? if not, trace back your steps.

Would have no bearing whats so ever being in 1st. As for the leak, that says it's the diff bearings. It could be as mentioned that the seal got pushed in to far, but if it was leaking prior, that answers that. You'll need to either have it rebuilt, or DIY, or have it replaced. VERY common thing with our 4g's. The fact that the axle is not flush by that 1/2" means it's probably not seated, but pix would be better to tell for sure.
