i30t vlsd trans
Just bought a transmission from another member and I want to make sure its a vlsd. I hear that the vlsd has something blocking view from one side to the other through the splines. I googled the transmission and found a pic and you can see through it. I spent an hour searching and cant find anything on the physical different between the transmissions.
Before trolls get here: I have no spare axles to turn the trans with right now. I have no trans code to check for a "V". I searched the stamping and found a bunch of bmw suv info.
Please help.

yes there is a "see through" test but you are understanding it backwards.
if the trans is VLSD you can see right through one axle hole, through the diff, and out the other side WITHOUT the diff cross shaft (about a 1/2" thick steel pin) being visible.
if the trans is not VLSD, you WILL be able to see this thick steel pin when you look in the axle hole.
or you can just judge by the size of the axle seals. on a VLSD the driver's side seal is way bigger than the passenger side seal (something like 3.5 or 4" outside diameter vs like 2-2.5" for the passenger side). on a non VLSD the driver's side and passenger side seal have the exact same outside diameter.

hey guys while on the topic, is the vlsd (5spd) from a 96-00 i30 the same as the vlsd on a 01 anniversary ed ?
I have a 01 20th anniv and need a new trans but cant find one, would I need a longer axle to fit the i30 transmission?

you mean the differential itself, or the entire trans?
the diff is the same.
the trans is essentially the same which means they interchange. the only difference is that from 97 and up had a double synchro 1st gear as opposed to single synchro 1st gear on the 95-96 4th gen and I30 trans (well they only made the I30 in 96+, but you know what I mean) and there is a very slight difference in the oil channel design on 3rd gear in the 00-01 transmissions. they also removed the 3rd gen mounting holes from the cases of the 5th gen transmission, whereas those mounting holes were present in the 4th gen trans case. and if memory serves me they got rid of one of the plastic oil channels in the case on the 5th gen trans, and actually cast that oil distribution channel into the aluminum of the case. also the yoke that connects to the shift rod is a different length on 5th gen transmissions than 4th gen. you can just swap the yoke by knocking out the pin and pulling it off, putting the proper one on. or you can leave it alone (that's what I did, it only moves the shifter about 1 inch.)
so basically, yes they are the same for all intents and purposes. just minor changes that don't really affect the usability or interchangeability of them unless for some reason you were trying to stick a 4th gen trans into a 3rd gen (which is possible to do, but you could not stick a 5th gen trans into a 3rd gen because the trans mount holes are no longer present).
