front crankshaft

alright well for the first time we took a good look under the hood of my 97 gle. found out that there's an oil leak(for sure oil and not other fluids) coming from the front on the passenger side, somewhere high up. read around and found that it's likely the front crankshaft seal

if this all sounds right, could someone please show me a diagram/give instructions on how to gain access to and replace the seal

another thing i noticed is that the plastic accordion things on the shocks are completely deteriorated. if someone could tell me the name for those so i could research them that would be great lol

Download the FSM. It is hosted on the NICO forums. It is not a simple issue.
How 'high up' is this leak; where in regards to the front or rear bank?

The dust covers on the shocks are not nec. However they do prolong the life of the shock. Unless you are replacing them or feel they have a good amount of life left, pointless.

thanks for the fsm. oil is collecting down close to the passenger side front tire, and it's coming from between the engine and fire wall or around that area

as far as this not being a simple issue...that's fine. we've swapped engines with the limited tools in our garage before so we're down for anything lol

From: middle TN
Rear Valve cover gasket..

is it to the rear of the tire? or more towards the front? Could be a number of things right there. Common leaks in the area

Rear valve cover gasket
oil pressure sending unit

not sure of others

to the middle/rear parallel to the tire. oil is dripping off the 3 bolts attached to the suspension closest to that tire

You lost me from the begining. You have a leak from up high and you think its the front crankshaft seal? There is only one crank shaft and its in the block. The crank shaft oil seal is low and dead center at the bottom of the engine behind the crank pulley. If youre thinking camshaft seal then youre still wrong as there arent really any. There is the valve cover gasket. That is prone to seeping but not driping. But then you say its dripping from the suspension....? Again lost. Are you talking about the driveshaft carrier bearing? Maybe some pics would help.
