Weird ECU code for a 99 SE

My engine light came on and I checked the ECU code and what I obtained was a 5-12 (5 long blinks and 12 short blinks). I used the ECU decoder and there is no interpretation for a 5-12.

I was wondering if anyone out there has ever run into this ECU code.

I have a 99 Maxima SE with auto.

Any help would be great.

Thanks!

This was in the sticky post at the top of the 4th gen forum...

DTC 0512
Diagnostic Trouble Code 0512 points to a problem with the rear Oxygen Sensor. The Engine Control Module detects this malfunction when an excessively high voltage from the sensor is sent to the ECM.
The possible causes include:
- Electrical Harness/Connectors
- The sensor itself.

I had the same code before.

I believe it's the right rear bank o2 sensor. I have to look at my FSM again.

Do you remember what you did to fix it? Did you take it into the dealer or was it a do-it-yourself job?

Thanks.

its a really simple fix.. jack up the right hand side of your car by the rear wheel well.. look behind the catalytic convertor... you will see a 1 foot long or so pipe with a sensor with wires sticking out of it.. i forgot what size wrench it is.. i think its a 22" open ended wrench.. i could be wrong.. then you can screw out the sensor.. trace the sensor back to where its going.. and then pop in the new one and screw it back in the pipe..

Also .. the Rear O2 sensor affects no form of performance on your car.. so its not a RUSH job.. you can get around to it when you feel like it.. sensor usually go for $65 - $110 from the dealership.. and no matter how hard it is.. the dealership is going to rip you off on labor.. its not that hard to do.. if you feel like attempting it.. go ahead.. its easier than changing spark plugs..

the Sensor from the dealership are Bosch modified sensor for the maxima.. i would get it from the dealership.. do you want to take a chance on something that is controling the Air/Fuel Mixture of your car? as in blow my motor if i am wrong? chances are they are the same sensor.. but i am not taking that chance

Re: Re: I had the same code before.

I did the repair myself. The part is about $100 from a discount Nissan dealer ie. Courtesy, Maxwell. The 1999 cali-spec is alittle different than other 4th gen. There are two rear O2 sensors. One located on the pre-cat and the other one is part of the Y-pipe. Here's the part number 22690-4L000. It will have a white insulation sleeve on it.

1MAX2NV, thanks again.

I'm going to wait til the light comes on again and then I'll do the switch. Just too lazy to do it now.

Thanks again.

Mine says the same thing but that's what you are going to use to do the self-diagnostic.

It appears that the 4th gen 99 Maximas have different text than the other 4th gens.

Hope this helps.

It does say Engine Idle Speed, but it is the same as the other 4th gens. The only thing with an SE-L like mine, is that you can't use a flathead to turn the ecu screw. You have to use a SMALL pair of phillips, the kind you'd use for glasses. (yes, that small)
