tranny problems ..where to start??

i just picked up another maxma its a 97 with 230k auto ....car was driving fine for about a year then about a month ago my friend went to drive it and it went no where car was in drive but did nothing felt like it was in nuetral then if you shift it to down to 1 it will go fine then shift up to 2 still fine as soon as i put it in drive it feel like its in nuetral ...maybe some one has gone thru this before and can give me some insight ..just figured i would ask around before i put a new trans in ??
reverse works fine also

just say i have alot of experience on cars, the solenoid in your valve body that control the shifting, it's all inside your transmission
