UIM Heat Shield/Wrap

Just thinking out loud, Have searched and seen that nobody has done this? Was wondering if you guys think it would add any sort of power gains, I know how hot that thing gets...

I know for a fact that at least one person has done this. Chrisman287 did his UIM and intake piping in DEI gold wrap

Oh nice. Any info on his gains? I have a piece of sheet metal from work that I am thinking of using as a heat shield just to see what it does.

I'm sure it keeps a small amount of heat down prob not as much as intake spacers

Well I'm making one at the moment right now. Gonna wrap it, then put the heatshield on it. I don't see how it won't make a difference though

I did it and my heatsoak seems to be eliminated. The DEI gold stuff is an adhesive tape, rated at up to 850 degrees on the reflective side and 325 IIRC on the adhesive side. It reflects 80% of that heat and with a 30ft roll I was able to do my UIM and CAI piping.

I actually like this set up a lot and I will be doing this on my 5.5 as soon as I get my hands on another roll.

Was looking at the DEI stuff online. Good to know it's good stuff, just ordered some.

Thanks for replying Chris, this the answer I was looking for

No matter what you apply to the parts externally they will still absorb heat since there still connected to the actual engine itself.
Fwiw, I didn't even notice a difference using the nwp spacers.

he seemed to act like he knew for a fact there were no gains. Proof as in a dyno sheet

There will most likely not be any noticable increases.

The UIM is cast iron iirc and there's no way of preventing heat soak...your best best would be to swap 00VI as stated before. It's plastic fiber-less heat soak than metal UIM.

Its aluminum. The heat transfer through the metal to metal contact with the engine will be much more than that of the air to metal contact from the engine bay. Even if you saw decreases in UIM temperature, it would be minimal reductions. On top of that, the LIM would still get just as hot as it was before, and wouldn't help your cause in any way. Its like reducing the ambient temperature from 90* to 80*. There really isnt that much of a performance difference.

The only benefit I see is wrapping the CAI piping.

I wrapped my PR Intake piping with header wrap. I drove an hour and a half in 90 degree heat this weekend. Popped the hood once I got to my destination and felt the wrapped and un wrapped sections of my intake piping. Noticeable difference. Seemed to eliminate heat soak.

I have my headers, and intake wrapped along with a custom heat shield on my intake filter. Along with my raised hood on washers mod I do notice a lot less heat soak in certain parts of the engine bay. It may not produce and HP gains but it can't hurt, right?
