ECU choices question for 4th gen
Hi,
I have done quite a bit of searching but not yet found a definitive answer.
Is there an equivalent to the calum ECU that the SR20 has that is available for the 96 VQ30? could I use a VG30 ecu if I reflashed it? does that have very different options that would make it incompatible?
I am thinking that the VG30 ecu might be a candidate replacement because of this page:
http://cherrypicker.tripod.com/id10.html
That has the maps to work with, in conjunction with a wideband and the "consult" software one can fill in the used cells and see which ones need a trim to bring the target AF ratio back on track.
Any other good choices for a diy tuning?

Are you in UK? If so, you might be able to use the Nistune. The north american maxima ecu's cannot use the Calum/Nistune daughterboards yet. I think they could work but no one has tested um since we have so many different ecu's(each year has a different board). It would cost alot of money just to test so it is easier to get a JWT tuned ECU or add an emanage to the factory ecu.

Hi,
Well I had already decided I didnt want an emanage, and a VG30 ECU is close enough, having the same capacity and bank angle as the VQ engine, it looks like there is one VQ engine supported by Nistune, the VQ30DET Y33 cedric! Emanage /= Calum realtime capability.
How different are all the ECU's? how many people have peeked and seen the differences?
Nistune does support the VG30 engine, and we have quite a few of those in the scrapyards for pulling cheaply.

Nistune is said to be working on a VQ30DE ECU, but they've been saying that for about 5 years. Bikirom supposedly prototyped 2 VQ30DE ECUs - one of which was supposed to be sent to me for testing but it never arrived - the sender claims it was lost in the mail after supposedly being returned to him 2 times before. Not sure what happened there but suffice to say it never got here. The guy still claims it exists and the other one (there were 2 made) is - according to him - in a VQ30DE powered 240SX down in Australia.
Anything can be done if you have the know how, time, and/or money. But so far, no one has been able to produce what you are looking for save for 2 prototypes that supposedly exist somewhere in the world.

I say go for it, me and another local here are trying to see what it takes to import a JDM harness+ECU so we can use Nistune, it'll be about as expensive but a more viable tuning option than EU+JWT.

So it seems that support for nitune capability for the VQ30 is flaky/suspect.
I guess that means investigating the VG30 ECU for any gotchas on its expected inputs.
But the maps should be sortable with a wideband. The way I see it is that the continued reflashing or re-dyno time for an emange means it wont take long before you are better off biting the bullet.
