what prevents the top strut nut from tighten?

Ive been having a noise on the front pass side. Only over bumps, i thought it was control arms at first.

Looked at everything and nothing seems to be out of place or broken. I went to tighten the top strut bolt. the 17mm. It spins, not super freely but it doesn't stop/tighten. I check the driver side and it stops.

I'm guess i need a new mount/ bearing unit? $40

At this point i'm thinking of getting a Monroe- drop in replacement at $110. Because car does have 130k on it. Should be a lot faster to put in. Plus new parts are always good. Would this effect the driver side strut? If that goes out then i'll replace that one but for now only pass side.

Bro the shaft spins thats why your tightening the nut and it just keeps turning.

BTW rule of thumb is to change struts in pairs i would never just do one and not the other.

The hole in the upper mount is shaped like a D. The threaded portion of the strut is also shaped like a D, so they fit together. Over time they wear out and you need to replace the mount.

If you replace the passenger side, you may as well the drivers side. Its just better to replace the parts in pairs. The quick struts are a decent deal if you want to stay stock.

the car used to be lowered, when my brother owned it. actually this is his account, he gave it to me because i own his 4th gen now.

I'm very tight on money and tools. But my brother told me the cheapest and fastest way to do this is get that pre built thing. cause all i need is like 17/19mm maybe other sockets but he gave me enough tools to handle this.

I know exactly what your talking about. I just had Gabriels put in and the top nut and shaft spins when I am trying to tighten the rears. My cousin actually placed a vice grip on the shaft somehow and tightened the nut from that doing that. I have no idea how the hell it worked or where exactly it was placed, because I failed when I tried...wish I was watching him do it.

I am having the same problem. I think tho I am just going to save up and get a Tein Basic Dampener kit. It will take like 3 months or so before i can get them. you think it would be ok till then or is this hurting anything. I know its not good to leave any problem untreated, so I was just curious. BTW it is my DD

I found these rubber covers work great for holding the strut piston from spinning. I'm sure there are other similar solutions too.

My bro told me not to get coilovers, says they blow out in the winter here in chicago. I dont have time to play with cars like he does. So i'm going to listen to him on this one.

Same reason why I didn't get coilovers we have harsh winters here in the Chi bro, and I don't feel like spending 800+ every year.
