Need exhaust system update plan
Need exhaust system update plan
I have a 1998 Maxima with a leaky catalytic converter. Just put in a muffler last year. Tired of replacing stuff one piece at a time. Want a better system that will last longer. Not interested in absolute maximum power. Just sick and tired of poor quality components.
Please recommend a system and source if you can.
Note: I live in Rhode Island and bought my car new from a dealer here, but a couple of years ago I discovered (by checking the VIN) that mine is a California car. Yuck!
Let me know if replacing exhaust components will make my California computer go nuts and throw out trouble codes, or worse.
One more note: I tried to use the search-this-forum and the site-search advanced search features and they didn't work. I even tried a search for the word "question" while on a page where that word appeared in the title of a thread...and the search function returned no hits.
Anyway...please help be ID a reasonable and reliable replacement for my current exhaust system, so I can try to find a Rhode Island shop to install it for me. Twenty-five years ago I would have done the job myself.

Your car is cali spec, its got extra emissions equipment. I would get rid of it all, cats, precats and replace the y pipe. Youll gain an insane amount of hp. Try to find a warpspeed/cattman y-pipe and go with 2.5in piping (3inch if you ever plan to go forced induction). Id say your best bet if you are concerned about money is to goto an exhaust shop and just get a new exhaust custom made. Have it mandrel bent to, not crush bent.
I've got my exhaust custom made by a buddy. My current setup is from the y-pipe back: cat delete, cherrybomb resonator, ebay muffler, all 2.5in piping.
