hey guys, i dont know if its just me being use to driving a accord up until i bought this maxima but it feels like i have too much play in turning. its hard to explain but basically my turning in the accord was more stiffer in a good way and in my maxima its looser but not in a dangerous way or even a bad way. is this how maximas turning is or can i stiffen it up a bit. its almost as if im complaning about having power steering but im not and im not taking it out lol i was just wondering if there was something that could be replaced in the steering wheel that would make it more tighter feeling. ill get use to it i ws just throwing the question out there thanks.

 

I think its a maxima thing. I have noticed this effect with each max i have owned. Or it might be the fact of never having replacing tie rods. IDK which. But my sis has a 1997 altima and her steering was noticeably more stiff.

 

for us 99's with much better steering effort.
95-98 power steering was a bit over boosted.

 

Swap in a 97 rack for stiffer steering with more "feel". 95-96 has cadillac steering (0 effort and 0 feedback). The turns ratio is a little higher, or the hydraulic assist drops, with the 97 in conjunction with the earlier pump. I could be wrong on the years, but its in the stickies anyway. Shake your front end down to check ball joints and tie rods.

 

ive noticed this when driving most new nissans too as in altimas and maximas and sentras versas. its night and day difference when hopping in a 3 series beemer with STIFF *** steering, and then pullin in a nissan altima.

 

Like I said its nothing bad but its really nice to know its not just me. My neighbor mentioned replacing a bushing in the steering wheel to make it more stiffer, anyone wanna explain this more? Thanks

 

He could be talking about a rag joint that was used on older cars and trucks, most vicles dont use them anymore though. At any rate what hes talking about would remove slop, not necessarily tighen the steering up.

The other possibility is the rack bushing which is the mounting point for the rack housing.

With the engine off rock the steering wheel back and forth and see if it still feels loose. You would feel loosness with a noticable thud at the end. I think the steering is just easier than your accustomed to.

I think I just gotta get use to it. Its not a bad thing I could be like my buddy who's eclipse didn't have powersteering at all lol, thanks for the help I just wanted to compare my steering to other maximas

 

change out those frozen rubber on the end links.
