Is My transmission Done For

So i drive my car today to go buy some injectors for the Max due to my recent issues that ive explained in my other threads. Car drives there fine, Drive it down the pkwy, no issues shifting smooth as usual. I get off at the exit go to downshift and i get it in neutral and it wont go into gear. I stop and try to engage 1st and it wont go into gear. i had to force it grinding it into 1st. I drive 2 more mins to my destination in 1st and that was the end of it. I wound up having to get it towed home. It wont go into ANY gear with the car running. But if i turn it off and put it in gear 1st or reverse it will go in start and move. Considering i never had any grinds or problems with the trans before im hoping this is not my trans and something else like linkage or something. Anyone have an idea what i should be looking for...

check the linkage, and clutch fluid reservoir. your clutch slave cylinder might be gone, although most of the time it gets really hard to shift and not completely lock you out. or your clutch line could be leaking

might be the synchros too, in that case a new tranny is the easiest

i did notice some fluid on one of the lines going to the trans when i was under the hood the other day, but didnt know where it was coming from. the reservoir is full. like i said as far as the synchros go, i drove it 25 mins shifting just fine. but thats also why im posting this because im not 100% sure.

if youre leaking clutch fluid that could be causing the problems

Yup, it could be causing the slave cylinder to not fully engage the clutch which would cause you not to be able to shift smoothly with the engine running.

I'd say your master cylinder is toast

Will it go into all gears with the engine off? Probably the hydraulics. Master, slave, or line. Tell us what you see in there, and we'll try to help.

this is a clutch issue, not a trans issue.

I'm having a similar problem...

My clutch pedal will work just fine and then just hit the ground with about an inch play to shift. I can run it that way for a few miles then the gears won't engage. I have checked the fluid in the MC. Sometimes it is low, but is always at the minimum mark or above to the full mark. Any suggestions???

If you can, climb under the car and check the slave cylinder while someone else pushed on the pedal and make sure it's fully engaging the clutch. It sounds to me like the slave may be done for.

yea it will... but when its on it wont go into any gear. also, now if i start it in 1st or rev. i dont have to take my foot off the clutch for it to move. with the clutch pressed to the floor the car will just drive as long as i dont pull my foot up.... but it still wont go into any gear while on.

Yup its your hydraulics, the trans is fine. Get ready to get raped or scammed at the shop though.

If u able put it in gear with the car off and drive it then the clutch is fine. Its your slave that is messed up.

A REAL mechanic would KNOW what was wrong, non of this "may" BS. True it could be debris in the clutch causing it to drag, but its highly unlikely. Its way more likely that you have a leaking line or slave.

Where did you see the fluid collecting? did you add any to the resevoire?

dude is trying to upsell you. he makes a lot more money if he convinces you to replace the clutch along with the hydraulics.

thats what im saying... but like i said the weather been too cold to be outside with the car this last week... thats the only reason its there.. no fluid needed in the reservoir. the fluid was on that line that runs right above the trans. it was like a hose of some type when i was cleaning the throttle body n the iacv and stuff the other day i noticed it.

Definitely not a reason to let someone take advantage of you and charge you hundreds if not a thousands of $ to replace a part that you don't need. I would sacrifice 30 mins in the cold to save hundreds of dollars esp in this economy. I've done it before and I would not hesitate to do it again. But thats just me. Don't let that idiot replace your clutch. I had this same issue last week; replaced my master cylinder and now my vehicle drives great. In your case you might have to replace the slave cylinder too. They are very easy to do esp the slave cylinder. Parts re not that expensive. Too bad you don't live in Raleigh, I would have done it for you at no charge.
