P0440 no need to fix?

I brought my car to a shop for the P0440 code evap small leak. The guy told me since I am in a state that has no inspection it would be a waste of money to fix it. He stated it does not effect the car at all. It does not effect gas mileage, the way the car runs ect. Is this true? Should I not worry about it?

If it throws the check engine light it has a pretty good impact on your gas mileage (it puts your car into 'limp home' mode, which from my experiences reduced my gas mileage by as much as 8mpg).

I would fix it personally, but its your money... I'd try a new gas cap and see if it goes away, considering that's the more common failure point and also one of the cheapest to fix.

That code will not trigger limp home mode, nor will it affect mileage.

Thanks for the clarification. Every time I've had a CEL my gas mileage has gone down the drain, so I've not known any different.
