Problems with New Exhaust without Pre Cats
Problems with New Exhaust without Pre Cats
Hi All,
I have a '97SE with an exhaust leak coming from the resonator rigt after the main catalytic converter. Because of this leak, and the current state of the remaining exhaust system, I am looking to replace the entire exhaust system with a kit from Warpspeed which includes the Y pipe, high flow cat, and pacesetter cat back and muffler. The only issue is that the Warpspeed kit does not include the pre cats on the y pipe that are stock with our cars.
My question is whther anyone has used any aftermarket exhaust kits that did not have the pre cats. If so, are there any issues with CELs or o2 sensor readings due to the lack of pre cats. Also, are there any issues with emissions inspections due to the lack of pre cats?
Lastly, does anyone know of any aftermarket exhaust kits that do have pre cats?

Yo man you'll be fine, when you buy any aftermarket Y-pipe the pre cats are deleted. I've had stillen's 1st gen race pipe on for 6yrs and never had any problems with CEL's or o2 sensor reading, plus the new y-pipe will have a place for you to install your o2 sensor. The only thing that you will notice is that your exhaust will be louder because the pre-cats are removed but that about it. And I've never had to worry about emission testing but as long as you don't have any cel lights I'm sure you pass.
If you live in California they might check. If your car is fed spec not in Cali they don't give a rats a$$. The pre cats aren't needed. They are only used during the warm up stages of the car. After the car has reached a warm enough temp they don't even make a difference on how much cleaner the exhaust fumes are. That job is left to the egr and the main cat.
Get your new exhaust and have better breathing car with more hp.

Mind you this is on my '00 FED Spec but I got a P0420 code shortly after replacing with new aftermarket Y (no pre-cats) and metallic substrate HF cat. Everything was running fine so put a spacer on the 3rd (Bank 1 Sensor 2 O2 Sensor) & everything is good now. But obviously I have a diff. & more sensitive ECU but worst case if everything is good and you get a P0420, space it out and you'll pass
