Power steering problem, need help.

Every time when I start the car and turn a steering wheel I hear a very loud screeching sound. At the same time my steering wheel shakes and doesn't want to rotate smoothly. All this happens when the car is cold and parked in a garage. I don't hear anything while driving or when the car is at its normal temp.
Is that a sign of a power steering pump going bad?
Thanks.

Did you check belt belt tension and fluid level?

The fluid level is fine. I haven't cheched the belt though. My 90K service is due tomorrow, so we'll see what happens.

Your belt is slipping. Might just need to be adjusted but at 90K i'm thinking replacement is in order.

Yep. Does anyone know how much dealerships charge for a 90K service?

Maybe it's the strut bearing.

Valvoline power steering fluid claims to eliminate screeching and fixes leaks... I don't know if they're claims live up to what they say, but its a cheap way to start looking into the problem.

Well, I brought my car to mechanic during lunch today. The problem is the power steering belt that needs to be replaced. Good thing it's not power steering pump - $$$.

Thanks guys for all your help.

You should do a power steering pump flush. flush out all of the old fluid, and replenish with fresh fluid (protects seals). Power steering pumps costs $$$.For the cost of fluid and your time its well worth it. Also in between belt changes you might want to pick up some Prestone belt dressing (Walmart) and spray the belts really good every now and then. You can't afford your belts to start slipping on your alternator/AC/PS pulleys (more problems). Good Luck! 96se 157,000 plus miles original p.s pump.
