Alternator or Belts? - 12.9v-13-8v @ idle, 14.2v driving

Doing this real quick while I search since today is my only day free this week.

I have replacement belts but I'm trying to narrow it down if its just the belts or the alternator too. At idle, the voltage drops to 12.9v-13-8v @ idle. Higher end of the latter with no load, lower end with radio/AC load. The belts are pretty worn, the groves are missing segments. Hypothetically, Would replacing the belts on a "bad" alternator ruin the belts? Or should I give it a try anyway? And I don't have a belt tension tool. Is it necessary or is there a method to wing it?

Thanks

Edit: oh, forgot to mention...on highway, or when acceleration, voltage rises to normal levels. Wondering if this is a belt slipping issue or not.

Replace the belts due to the cracks you see in the belts. Your alternator is fine. Being a belt driven device, the faster the engine turns, the better the ALT works.

The FSM quotes the performance of the ALT of 13.5V at <1000 rpm and 14.1-14.7 regulated. Remeber your idle is probably something like 600-700 RPM, so your reading of 12.9 V is not really low.

If you have to wing tightening the belts, the way I do it is to only tighten the belts to the point that they stop slipping.....or maybe just a smidge more.

The alternator is working fine. Just replace the belts. The FSM calls for .16 inch deflection in the section between the crankshaft pulley and the air conditioner compressor, pressing with a force of 190 pounds. That's really tight.

Still Have that alternator checked. There is no way you should be dipping into 12's even at idle with no load.

If you are telling us the voltage drops to 8v, then your regulator is toast and you need a new alternator.

If you are sayin its down to 12.8 then your fine.
