Check you gas tank straps......

Hi everyone,
While driving my 1996 Maxima this afternoon, I heard a dragging metal sound. I quickly pulled over, and I noticed the the drivers side gas tank strap had rotted away and was dragging on the ground. I was close to the shop and the tank seemed secure, so I drove it. When we got the car on the lift the strap rotted away from the bolt end. For the time being we got a heavy gauge metal wire there to be safe. The pass side strap does not look much better, so I will replace that one as well. I will head to Nissan in the morning to order the parts. The tank seems very secure, even with only one strap. Is there something else holding the tank in?
I also hope the bolts don't snap off. I will hose the bolts down with penetrating oil for a week or so, hopefully that will do the trick.

Thats kinda scary. I know explosions are just in the movies, but all I thought was metal strap scrapping the road, sparks, gas tank....... /shudder.

Yikes.....

I ordered the straps today, they will be in on Thursday. I just hope that the bolts come out without breaking. I have sprayed them twice already.

And sadly this is the life of an older car owner on the east coast/rust belt states......My 96 is rotting fast these days, with the rockers going first.

I looked at my straps while I worked in redoing the entire bottom half of my engine. I noticed it was rusted right by the bolt as you stated. How much does it cost? I may order it and replace this summer as well.

Just happened to me yesterday. UGH lol... I think the reason why it is so secure is because the Fuel pump is screwed into the rear seat while also into the tank so really. All the weight is not being partial on the fuel pump ring. So probably a good idea to replace it soon I would imagine. I am gonna wait until. I hear today if I am getting a new maxi or not.

Did you smell any gas or anthign?

I get this light gas odor from the driver side of the car near the fuel tank and filler cap. I had the car up on a lift last week and the fuel lines and tank didnt look all that rusty, so i cant figure out where tha smell is coming from. No odor in the cabin either.
