What is the sensor on the EGR pipe for?

I've read (on-line) "temp" sensor and "flow" sensor, which is it or is it both...???

Anyone know what symptoms one might get if that sensor is not working properly?

It will send a code if your EGR is clogged which it always becomes over time. Im trying to figure out a cheap route to block it off permanently

 

If you want to block it off completely, cut the pipe and crimp it closed.

 

Thats doesnt sound like a good idea to me. I would still know it looks crappy back there. I want to just take an EGR gasket and get some plates made

 

What kind of symptoms can I expect if the sensor (not the EGR Valve) is bad, other than a code? and is it a temp or a flow sensor?

I couldn't agree more. He asked what was the easiest way to remove it was. That is by far the easiest way. I've legitimately removed mine. There isn't a single part left on my engine related to the EGR. I simply removed all the parts, rerouted the coolant lines with new hose and welded the intake manifold hole shut. My new headers don't have an EGR so that took care of that end.

The EGR system loops exhaust fumes back through the engine cycle to reduce emissions. Other then a code the car runs fine (if not better) with the whole EGR removed. You'd still probably pass emissions without (minus the check engine light) Not sure on that one though.

 

Appreciate the replies... tomorrow (later this morning) I'll be trying to find my starting issue (hard to or won't start when the engine is warm, starts fine if cold or hot, runs great once started). I won't mess with the EGR pipe (just yet) in the morning.

I changed the water temp sensor (not the gauge sensor) before... going to do it again, maybe I got a bad one. This problem has to be a temp sensor somewhere... I think...??

Probably will not pass emissions if you are in a state that measures them. EGR system reduces nitrious oxide emissions (NOx) by recirculating exhaust gases.
