Getting my car str8 piped(no cat)

I decided to get my cat converter cut out and str8 pipe it for now. The car still has the stock y-pipe and resonator and a no name muffler i got from my uncle. How do u guys think it will sound with out the cat? I imagine it wont be too loud since it still has the resonator on it. Also how much power will I gain from that? i know it wont be much but it'll be nice to have some extra power.

You will gain nothing unless your car was extremely clogged then you might notice a little something

straight piped maximas with stock y-pipes sound amazing though. true straight pipes, no resonators or mufflers.

If your going to straight pipe it then at least take the resonator off as well but if you like the sound of the muffler you have then you can leave it as most aftermarkets are straight through anyways. It will probably sound like crap with the resonator still on I imagine. In for a vid though. Hollar if you don't know how, I want to hear the set up with stock components

When you straight pipe don't you lose a lot of back pressure? Thats the only thing I've heard people warn me of anytime I mentioned it. I'm sure it will sound amazing though.

It very well could lose hp, good question. I do not know. I do know that every exhaust is designed a certain way to aid certain torque characteristics so eliminating those designs could have harmful affects. hmmmm

yeah, I feel you . I just don't feel comfortable having a super loud car without the performance to back it up.

Those headers don't give the performance?

What to expect:

"It's straight pipe from the catalytic converter back up to where the mufflers suppose to go but as you can see there's no muffler. I extended the pipe all the way now so it's now 3' then I put the end 2 1/2' then blew the tip up too 3' again."

You're going to lose HP with it simply straight piped, the N/A motor needs back pressure and what you're doing is depleting it of it

This was my car with an open y-pipe:

Good times

I always thought that cats decreases horsepower not the other way around. For example when the Jaguar xj220 came out they tested it with and without the cats. when they took them out the car gained 60 horsepower and the car's top speed increased. I guess its not the same with all cars.

My car actually sounded like the first video a few months ago after my rusty resonator blew out and I got a new resonator from maximajoe in North Dakota
Like I said im just cuttin off the cat...not the resonator or muffler and it still has the stock y pipe.

Oh word. Yes cats do decrease HP and exhaust flow with High Flow Cats being an exception. I think it will still be louder without the cat

It was fast for a week, now it feels slow as I've got used to it.

Although, I did pull a newer gen GTI with at least an exhaust yesterday. It felt good.

I currently have long tube equal length headers and ypipe, Stock cat, No Res, and OBX-R muffler. It's pretty damn loud and I still have the cat. I planned on getting a resonated test pipe to try and clear up some of the rasp. It does have a very very nice sound above 4k rpm though. and I do get some backfire on down shifts, which I rather enjoy.

I've also pulled on a GTI and an SRT4. The SRT4 asked if it was boosted when we got to the next light. He was sad when I told him it was N/A and had over 250k miles.

I have stock headers, WS ypipe and magnaflow hi flo cat and muffler n stock res. It sounds great on start up and idle but almost too ricey when you get on it....my 2 cents.

The vr4 on the other hand has 3" straight pipe from turbo back....loud as hell and sounds great....

95% of your back pressure is created by your stock headers and y pipe. and a n/a motor doesnt need hardly any back pressure, it needs good exhaust scavenging which can be made with little backpressure

from what i gathered over time is that N/A's need some back pressure, but when your boosted (turbo or supercharged) less back pressure is better

backpressure is nothing but bad on ANY internal combustion engine. anyone that ever says "you need backpressure or you'll lose horsepower" does not know what they are talking about. how many times does that backpressure article from the engineers at garrett honeywell need to be posted?

for the OP, you will gain "something" but almost certainly not enough to be noticed, and with the stock resonator in place and stock ypipe you won't notice much of a sound change either.

str8 = lazy people that can't type the full word out or people that can't simply spell the word correctly.

The quotes in your signature follow along the same line.

ive got 2.5 from the Y back. just pipe.
sounds super mean. i <3 it.
plus loud exhaust means you drive harder to hear it, so lose mpgs and will feel faster..

i hate to see the muffler can just chilling out back.. it drives me crazy.

I have a 99 with stock headers and ypipe and I deleted the resognator. I bought that "N1" style from ebay. It does not sound loud at all. It is not too ricey either. If it was, I would have taken it off in a heart beat. Heres what mine sounded like before my 3.5 swap....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lj9r6...eature=related

After the 3.5 swap it was similar in sound but it was just much much deeper growl, still not loud but just deeper... Il try and see if I can post a video. I LIKE IT!

Cattman Y, no res, no cat, and a cheap no name muffler.. It's loud and not the best sounding Max, but I like it.
