Blown VQ30DE!
Blown VQ30DE!
This is not my Maxima. My friend has a gold 96' SE Maxima with an auto tranny. He was racing another car when he blew his motor. It was blown due to lack of oil. When we drained the pan before removal it had a quart or less of oil in the crank.
These are pictures of the carnage. He intends to fully rebuild the VQ30 and reinstall it. He also has a VQ35 that is going to be built for boost down the road.
Damage was a destroyed rod on piston 2.

The warning systems in these cars are pathetic. He said he saw the light flicker once when he started the car after leaving work that night. Light never came on otherwise. I also have seen similar activity when low on oil. Hence the reason I bought an Oil pressure gauge. The factory gauges just don't cut it, especially when you start modifying for more power. Regardless it still sucks that he didn't keep an eye on the oil level. He's past his pissed off phase and now in his motivated rebuild phase.

Why in the hell are you rebuilding it? Just swap in another one.... Cost 1/2 as much and take 1/4 of the time..... The motor isn't the cause of it failing, it's the operator. Trust me I know, I've killed 2 already.
Oh I'm well aware of it being an operator issue. Like I said, not my car, not my motor. He said the shop he works at can get good deal on a rebuild kit for the VQ like $300. And his dad machines motors. So he can get all the machine work done for pennies and get all new parts from Nissan for cheep, why not rebuild it? I'd much rather have a fully rebuilt motor for $300-400 then pay $100-200 for a mid to high mileage motor from a junkyard or wholesaler.

Also a rebuild kit, what manufacturer? If it isn't OEM it really isn't worth it then.
I can go on and on on why rebuilding this particular motor is a waste of time..... Unless you're not putting in stock components... different story.
If the white car stays around long enough.... you'll see wushup

It's a rebuild kit from Nissan. So yes, OEM. I think it's possible he may be upgrading cams and few other things. Honestly I don't know what his full intentions are with it. As I stated, he has a VQ35 that he wants to build up just sitting in the garage. He just told me he can get OEM parts for cheap and the machine work is practically free. I say why not. If it only costs a little bit more to have a damn near new engine then it sounds worth it to me. It's possible he even has plans to turbo it.

and it only takes 30 sec to check the oil level if you see the light flicker...
30 sec of your life can save you a lot of money and time on the long run
That's why I'm constantly checking mine and have the gauge. I'd rather not rebuild or replace my motor right now.

Some dealers have clearances on trying to get rid of chit that's been around for too long, I got my 350z clutch disk for $39.xx shipped.
I honestly don't know how it's that cheap but that's what it was when we looked it up through his work.

And he didn't think to shut it off and check the oil when the light flickered At him? Dude where's the common sense? sounds like someone needs to be shot if you ask me, regardless if whether or not he works at a shop. I know where I'm NOT taking my car.
He's in the process or building a VQ35 for boost. Not sure what his intentions are to be honest. I'm sure he'll want something over 350hp which should be easily be achievable. He will be using upgraded internals, not stock internals.
