I don't know. I know the wiring is different and pretty sure only the front left one measures AFR.

search front heated oxygen sensor. go to rock auto and get a decent one. Its kinda importante. As far as interchangeability the up stream is diff from the downstream. Here http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/rafr...k41135-2678608 get the airtex ones IIRC they are like $34. whole bunch of wholesale prices right now so load up

OK, Mike, you need to change the DOWNSTREAM one right? IIRC Bank 1 sensor 2 is downstream. This would be the one by the cat. Here is a link for down stream... 4 wires http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-DIRECT-F...76df41&vxp=mtr

Upstream has 3 wires and those 2 I believe are interchangeable with each other.

Per http://www.courtesyparts.com/kb_sear...utton=Go&cat=1

Bank 1 Sensor 1, located on exhaust tube near firewall
Bank 2 Sensor 1, located on manifold near radiator
Which would leave Bank 1 Sensor 2 located pre cat (Under the car)

Don't know if this has helped at all or just confused. I'd just search UPSTREAM and DOWNSTREAM on ebay. So NO, the one you posted in your 1st post will NOT fit DOWNSTREAM.

You're close - Sensor 2 is always "post" (after) cat. Fed spec cars have one post cat sensor, identified as Bank1 Sensor 2; Cali specs have two post cat sensors. In our Maximas, Bank 1 is the cylinder bank at the rear of the engine compartment; Bank 2 is at the front of the engine compartment.

Partially yes, but you left out the most important qualifier, The banks shows the physical location, the SENSOR NUMBER tells you whether it is up stream or downstream.

FED SPEC :

Bank 1 Sensor 1 = Firewall side on the Y pipe reachable under the car ( but still UPSTREAM

Bank 2 Sensor 1 = Front Engine just below engine mount on the Y pipe Upstream as well

Bank 1 Sensor 2 = POST cat downstream after all the emission crap on the stock pipe.

Upstream sensors are interchangable with each other. Downstream will NOT work anywhere else but Downstream.

They should have just named them starting from the front of the car 1, 2, 3 ...this whole "bank" and sensor number is just confusing. I'll have to save this thread though for future reference.

That is great description. I thought I had this bank 1 and 2 issue figured out back in 2005, but is still confusing. I will be keeping this one for future reference.

the first ebay link at the top is for the main oxygen sensor, the one that determines your air to fuel ratio, bank 2 sensor 1. I just bought this oxygen sensor and its working great so far for me

I have finally found a diagram that makes sense to me, and I thought that I would post it for all to see. This website allows you to input your specific vin# and receive detailed diagrams of the parts "http://www.nissanpartszone.com".

Our engine is a V shape guys. 2 different banks. Every direction in a car is given as if you are on the drivers side. So left is always radiator side and right is always firewall side. Just call and ask the company you are ordering from if you have questions its not embarrassing to not know something and a whole lot better than ordering the wrong part anyways

Nice. This applies only to a CALI spec Max since it has 4 O2 sensors, right?

@Wizard (By the way bad *** tail lights man..)
This diagram shows both Federal and Cali specs. From what I understand
Federal:
Bank 1 sensor 1
Bank 2 sensor 1
Bank 1 sensor 2
as Phromethius stated "Bank 1 Sensor 2 = POST cat downstream after all the emission crap on the stock pipe."

Cali:
Bank 1 sensor 1
Bank 2 sensor 1
Bank 2 sensor 2
Bank 1 sensor 2
In that order according to the diagram (LH, RH).

@dwapenyi
And now my head is hurting again and has been since 2005, but I believe this is how it goes and I agree with ShocknAwe I am going to call rock auto before I order this Bank 1 sensor 2 (H02S12) and ask to make sure.

Picture is wrong as far as labeling the banks for the upstream (before the cat) sensors. Bank one is always the bank with cylinder #1; in our vehicles cylinders #1, 3 and 5 are in the REAR bank next to the firewall.

^ thats right. on my car, the vq30de engine. the odd number cylinders(1,3,5) are closest to the firewall and thats bank 1. The even numbered cylinder(2,4,6) are closest to the radiator and that is bank 2. I misspoke earlier about the banks when I said the radiator side is bank 1 and firewall is bank 2. This should clear it up but nissan calls both front heated oxygen sensors and they will fit both. The only different ones are the post cat and those WILL NOT fit on the y-pipe locations. Or if you are a visual learner:

and this is the fed spec:

so as you can see the 02 near the cat is also bank 1 which is a bit strange but it is what it is. Again Nissan calls them front and rear heated oxygen sensors and uses the right(firewall) or left(radiator) directions but I believe all of the 02 sensors the cali and fed spec share are the same wire color and the cali spec cars just have other sensors with other color wire. Hope this helps.

bobflood

I think your right about my labels:

Bank 1 sensor 1
Bank 2 sensor 1

I have a 1999 SE (Federal 3 sensors) Can we agree that for my vehicle
Bank 1 sensor 2 is labeled correctly in my diagram and in Shocknawe's diagram the label is:

H02S2-B1
Rear O2
sensor B1
(White)

The part # we should look for is
226A0-0SL710?

I want to order one for my car but I do not want to get the wrong one or have a parts guy insist on the wrong one.

Ummm....Kinda. Bank 1 sensor 2 is the only correct item in your diagram.

ShocknAwes diagrams are correct for everything, so I would just use that instead.

Fed and Cali Spec cars have the same banks. The difference is that the Cali spec car has more O2 sensors.

Bank 1 sensor 1, should be a 3 wire 02(2 white, one black, closest to firewall). On the actual sensor itself has 3 holes drilled down the sensor. And that sensor will have more wire than the rest. Also do NOT drop the sensors, I read that a foot or more fall can cause the sensor not to work. If u r FED spec u only got 3 sensors, one near the firewall of the y, one closer to the rad, and one after the cat converter(4 way).

Yeah sorry to confuse guys, my run down applied ONLY to FED spec. I just redid all my sensors, did like three months of research before hand on such a simple job. Thats why I know about the FED spec. my summary is correct for Federal maxs and SHocks diagram for CALIFORNIA spec is correct for Cali maxs

Denso sells great O2 sensors at a great price and their website lists both the
front O2 sensors as identical with the same part# 234-3098

Amazon is selling them for $43.94 each with free shipping!!
http://www.amazon.com/Denso-234-3098...3567364&sr=8-1

So the question is, are the front sensors identical, interchangeable?

Yes, I got my Denso's from Rockauto.com for around the same price. And Yes both upstream aka "Front" sensors are interchangable. They are in fact identical parts. you just put in a qty of 2 if you are replacing both.

If you look under the Compatible vehicles listing it is labeled as a Downstream sensor. I would say you are good with this purchase. You needed a downstream and ordered a downstream. Looks right to me!

That's what I was thinking too, luckily this seller labeled it as downstream sensor. Many sellers out there just label them as 3 or 4 wire oxygen sensors. Thank you for your confirmation Phromethius.

I know the 95/96 maximas have the downstream inside the catalytic converter and the sensor is much smaller. I would go under the car to verify that your sensor is inside a pipe and not in the catalytic converter.
