Recommendations on New Tires

I tried this once before but I was only able to complile a list of the worlds condom manufactureres. Lets try this again. I'm looking for suggestions on a good all-season tire to put on a 99 SE. Also what were the stock tire sizes and make for that year.

I assume you have 16" SE wheels. Get all-season Dunlop SP5000 225/55-16 or 225/50-16. It's a little wider for better traction.

The stock tire size is 215/55-16.

I just put a set of Dunlop Sport A2's 215/55/16 on my 99 SE-L. Great tire!! Very smooth, quiet tire and the car rides like it's on rails on the highway. Handling is much better then the stock RS-A. The feedback section in TireRack also has excellent reviews on the A2.

Re: Re: Recommendations on New Tires

Bridgestone Potenza RE950 were the factory installed tires correct.
I also heard they are good but only last around 50K miles because of the softer rubber.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I spoke to a tire specialist and was looking to purchase the Potenza RE950's also and he told me that they were a hard tire to balance thus did not reccomend them.

Is this correct?

Absolutely not factory installed tires. Good tires that stick have softer compound. Just go to www.tirerack.com and do some research. It's a very helpful sight

Potenza 950's is whats wrapped around mine, balanced just fine too. Love them so far in dry and wet traction, just need to test them out in snow soon. I have them in the 215/55/16 size also!

It seems to me the best bang for the buck are either

Kumho
ECSTA Supra 712
Size:215/55WR16

or

Yokohama
Avid V4
Size:215/55VR16

Any preferences.

count me as another vote for Dunlop SP Sport A2's. i've only put 1500 miles on them, but drove them on a 1000 mile roundtrip during christmas and through 6 inches of unplowed snow yesterday in rural VA and these tires are NICE!

I have a friend of mine that really likes those, but I could not be happier than my new 235/4517ZR Falken Azennis ST-115 they are wonderful, the quietest tires I have ever owned, and handle very well, just waiting on some rain to see how they do in the wet, and they have a very high treadwear of 360, which is 80 more than the Kumhos I had, which were louder, check out the prices on victoriatire.com

GXEs: Yokohama No-names
SEs: Toyo Proxes A05/Goodyear Eagle RS-A
GLEs: Not sure.....

Whatever you do, DON'T get the A05s or the RS-As. Both are crappy, unsafe tires. I'm surprised Nissan isn't in a class action suit over the lack of quality from both of these tires, expecially the Toyo A05s......

Thats funny, In Canada the ES (and maybe the SE) models came with Bridgestone Potenza's. The ES is a dressed down SE (no moonroof/leather)

Hey Toffy , you got to check out tirerack.com . I just bought new tires today. I went with the Firestone Firehawk SH30's. They will replace my Firehawk GTA's. I have a '95 5spd and those GTA's gave me 67k of great service . I take a couple cruises to Vt in the winter and those tires were great in dry, rain and snow. Why did I go with the SH30's ??? Because of the good reviews from the tirerack and I was too damn cheap to go with the Protenza 950's. I found a local place that will get them and install and balance for basically the same price as the tirerack (cost +shipping+install).

Good Luck !

Nissan continued their great tire choice with the 5th gens... the 17" Potenza RE92s are among the worst tires known to man. Even WRX owners with their road glue AWD complain nonstop about those tires.

I've had the SH30s on my car, they were excellent. Outstanding wet traction and very good on dry roads also. My brother's car has the RE950s on, those are great tires also. Lots of grip in dry conditions, I haven't driven it in wet conditions though.

i reccomend this tire as well.... I just put these on my car today.... wow are the quiet! Only thing I hear at highway speeds is wind noise... that is IT, without lying, i will tell you, i honestly was feeling a little sleepy lol.. they are super quiet, smooth, handle well.... although i haven't had a chance to test them out well yet. Bargain at 92$ per tire at tirerack.com

80% of original equipment tires absolutely suck!!! regardless of (vehicle) manufacturer fo (tire) brand. OEM tires are designed for 2 things
A: hold air
B: customer drives new car off dealership lot

i work for a tire retailer and the biggest mistake i see people make is to say "i want to buy the same thing that car came with, thats how it was designed/built"

my point, dont by OEM tire (models) ie potenza re92, proxes ao5, eagle rsa.

2nd mistake "toyo, bridgestone, goodyear, michelin etc etc are junk"

a lot of your OEM junk would not be in existance without the vehicle manufacturers begging for them to be made.

cost no object topline z rated: Toyo proxes t-1s, Bridgestone potenza s-03, BFG kdw, Pirelli pzero, Yokohama avs sport, Goodyear eagle gsd2

good z rated less $$ damage: potenza 730, proxes fz4, nitto 555zr, yok a520, p7000

low$ bang for buck: ecsta supra 712,sumitomo htr1/2

some of these selections are "M+S" rated, trust me it doesnt mean $hit in snow. Z rated 16,17,18in tires in 225,235,245 widths will not do well in snow.

good h rated all season performance. Bridgestone potenza 950, Toyo proxes tpt,

I second on the Kumho. I bought a set in June and happy with it so far -- quiet and smooth. It is good in the rain too.
