I have a friend who has a 2001 Grand Prix GTP. I've read stats on numerous pages that either claim that the GTP takes the Max by a few tenths of a second, or the other way around. I was wondering if anyone has any real life experience racing these machines. He works non-stop, so arranging a race has been tough, but I'd like an idea as to how good my chances are. I've got a '98 Maxima, 5spd, all stock.

Thanks in advance...

Well, with a 5-speed you at least have a chance. But sorry. 3.8 Liter SCed engine. 240hp or so. About 280lb of torque.
They are speed limited to about 112. =) So you should be able to hang on till around 112 and just walk right on by.. =) I hope you can shift like a crazyman. You're gonna need it. Get some simple boltons and you will keep up easier. Its really a no win for the max. The maxima usually does well at stoplight races because of its torque. But the GTP has way more. And the GTP with 240hp is no slouch on the highway either. Drive your max like you stole it. You're gonna need it since your friend only has to mash the throttle.

Don't even try, if your buddy knows how to drive, you got no chance. I got a 96 5 speed and I raced many of them, never beat one. My manager has one, he did bunch of **** to it, that thing flies, really. All his friends have GTPs too, I raced them on numerous occasions, came close, but not close enough to even consider beating them.

Stock gen4 se 5-spd vs. stock GTP could go either way.

Any mods to the GTP and you're going to see his taillights...

Hmmm...

At the annaul Grand Prix Gathering hel in KC and at our track, the stock GTPs were pulling mid to lower 15s at 90mph to my high 14s@94mph. The typical modded (3.4-3.5" pulley, intake, exhaust) GTPs were pulling mid to higher 14s@94-95mph. Which put me right on their bumper. The advantage of the GTP is it can hook up a little better on launch. The modded one's got out of the whole by a 1/2 car and held it the whole way.

On the street, I've raced quite a few stock and modded GTPs and I've beat most. From a roll, they don't stand much of a chance vs a well modded 95-97 Maxima. My most favorite race was against my friends GTP that has a 3.4" pulley, intake, chip, and a full blown exhaust system. He was running 14.2@98mph at the time. From a roll at 45mph, he got the jump, I grabbed 2nd, and he only got 1 1/2 cars on me by 110mph. And he had the jump!!!!!!

If you have a 2k 5 speed and you can drive it damn good like MY4DSC (who runs 14.8s) or Kev (so i've heard )you can stay with the GTPs. The GTP run high 14's. Let them have their intake, exhaust and pulley, forget it then they are into the low 14's.

Dont have a chance

They put down to much torque at low rpms, they will pull away from you by the next red light. If your doing a highway race you'll fly by at 115mph. If you have a 1995 max se 5spd, y-pipe, intake, cat-back it will be close from red light to red light. Either way wide open you have him beat

Try a search for "GTP"...

there should be enough info to last you a while.
Have fun.

Actually the GTP is limited @ 128mph w/ the stock chip. GTs and SEs have the lower speed limiter. Of course a new PCM overrides the speed limiter.

Since the GTP are American cars you might get lucky and have it break down at the stop light.

The '97 and '98 GTPs do 0-60 in 6.6 secs (I don't know if the newer ones have gotten slower or not). The '97 Maximas do 0-60 in 7.1 secs (the '98s are slower, if anything). So it doesn't look good for the Maxima.

I beat him so bad, he just made a quick U-turn. BTW, GTP is supercharged, supercharged maxima is up there with the corvetts!! why are they so proud!!!!!!

Go for it

Like it's been said those GTP are supercharged. If you can keep it close with him them be proud. Your stock car just gave a supercharges car a race. With some mods GTP's are in low 14's, Max supercharged with mods are in the 12's, Corvette Territory. So who has the better car now, anyone with a supercharged Maxima, through out a challenge to any one with a GTP and see if there are any takers. Prolly not.

Well, when my 95 5sp GXE was stock, I raced a GTP and it was neck and neck the whole way, up to about 80 then we had to slow down.

Many of you look at the car's stats only, like the 0-60. You have to consider the point that the 6.6 sec is pulled off by a proffesional driver on a closed road. Many times it's the driver that wins, not the car. I was at a track once and some kid had his dad's Ferrari and got beaten by an Integra, figure that. If 2 equal drivers were driving a GTP and a 5 speed Maxima, GTP will most likely win. Like I said, minor mods put the GTP up there, my buddy has one that is running low 12's. But a Maxima with a CAI and Y-pipe can definitelly put up a stink.

Everyone's starting to sound like a bunch of misinformed Riceboys. The GTP can be a very quick car with $500 in mods. Even somoe stock GTPs have hit 14.3@96mph in cold weather and good prep. Many modded GTPs hit mid 13s@102mph which IS S/C MAXIMA TERRITORY!!!!! Yes, I have beaten A LOT of stock and slightly modded GTPs (3.5" pulleys, intake), but I don't stand much of a chance against a well driven GTP with a 3.4-3.25" pulley, removed u-bend, raised fuel pressure, heat wrapped manifold, intake, and exhaust. That setup lands easy mid to high 13s on street tires at the track. Like I said before, I've got a friend with a GTP coupe that has a 3.4" pulley, intake, exhaust work, chip, and a 70 shot of NOS. He's running 14.0@101mph without the NOS and a 13.3@104mph on the NOS. Point is, don't take GTPs lightly because more often than not they are not stock.
