For reference, I have a 1995 Maxima SE with a blown head gasket and RMS. So I want to upgrade to a VQ35. My understanding is as long as its a FWD VQ35 it should just bolt right in. I'm not too sure about the transmission and hope you guys can point me in the right direction.

Hey guys so I found a VQ35 with only 25k in my price range, problem is it comes with an automatic transmission. I really wanted a 6 speed which would have been fun. Should I suck it up and get the AT? Would it be easier? Or should I keep looking for one with a MT? Will the new tranny require new mounts and axles? Or will everything bolt right up? I've searched but couldn't find someone with a similar situation. Thanks

 

Should check the All Motor Section, but from what I read I believe the VQ35 will bolt up to the transmission with no problems, if you are MT look for a MT and if AT go with AT, unless you are planning to swap out the Transmission also...

 

ya I figured itd be easier to just get a VQ35 with a transmission and replace both at the same time. Will a 2006 Manual transmission just bolt right in? or is an automatic easier?

 

the vq35 doesn't exactly bolt in without any work on your part. you need to either swap timing equipment on the engine, or rewire you 4th gen to use the VQ35 ecu.

same with the 6spd trans. significant (but not insurmountable) changes are required. changing from rod linkage to cable linkage is chief among them.

a 4th gen trans will bolt right to the VQ35 though, if you decide to go that route.

so (basically) i (5spd) can get a fwd vq35de from anything and drop it in and change to 3.0 timing and thats it?

Little more entailed then that. But the majority of the swap is the timing components and actually dropping it in and taking it out.

 

Go with a manual. If you are also doing the timing swap from the 3.0 stick with a 4th gen 5 speed trans. That is what I have in my 3.5 swap and it is a blast to drive!! Plus those 5 sp trans can be found easily and for cheap.

i know having the MT would be better but is there really a big disadvantage with having an auto 3.5 swap versus a MT? i know the 3.5 engines really hustle harder in the 4th gens.

the 3.5 motor will bolt to the 3.0 A/T BUT from What i have heard is even if ur soft on it the trans wont last but a couple months just because the low end torque the 3.5 Makes. so deff Dont go that route.

Wanted to update you guys without making a new thread. I bought a matching 2002 VQ35 with the AT with only 25k miles! Should be shipping this Monday and I'll start the swap this coming Friday. So stoked.

 

do I need to change out the ecu or anything electrical to put in a 95 trans in my 04 maxima? Or will it just latch up and that’s all?
