New Car Day

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the forums and just bought my first maxima tonight. 1999 Gold SE with a 5 speed manual. I got a really good deal on it. 176K on the clock. Fresh clutch and they just did the timing chain gasket (Yay!). Needs a little cleaning up so I will post some pics when she is looking good. I don't have much planned for her, but I say that everytime I buy a nissan.

Look forward to contributing and sharing with the group.

Cheers,

S

I had a 2004 Sentra SE-R SpecV that I owned for about 5 years. I did so much to that car, but kept it very modest. Converted the front end to the 02-03 model, CAI, Cat back, Rockford sound system. 18" Konig's on BF goodrichs.

I wasn't a huge fan of that motor tho. The torque steer made it very difficult to tame. It struggled to get off the line because of the wheel hop. All in all it was a good experience.

I had a stanza in high school. It was truly a point A to B car.

2700, not bad at all. I paid exactly that for my 99 back in january with 141K.

Don't bother with new headlights. If you have a drill, pick up a 3M headlight restoration kit, under 20 bucks Click me for before/afters

those headlight kits are great for headlights with a little oxidation. i would def buy another set for as cheap as they are on ebay. it looks nice, might as well make it look new. leather steering wheel covers are cheap too!!! also, light replacement took me all of 45 minutes the first time i ever did it..

nice car man... as for the headlight try to restore those first... DO NOT BUY EBAY HEADLIGHTS!!!! unless you find an OEM set that is clean... the cheap depo headlights have the worst road illumination ever... those only good for a HID retrofit... other than that that is one clean maxima...

Thanks for the heads up on the ebay headlights. Are there any of the R34 style headlights that work ok or do they all need the HID retro? I am not afraid of doing but have a budget I am working within. I was planning on doing the restore kit to them this weekend. I had an MR2 Spyder that I seemed to have had to use it on twice a year almost.

Car looks mint! Congrats! I am SOOOOOO jealous of those clean tan mats. I swear, dealerships always can get them super clean.

Not really, they all have bad output seeing pics from all the .org'ers here. If you want to keep your headlights constantly fresh. Do the cleaning yourself, take the headlights to a paint shop and have them spray clear coat on them. After I did that, my headlights have been crystal clear.

I bought it from a mom & pop type place. I don't think he had any clue how different it was from other maximas. He had a 1995 GXE auto with similar mileage for $2500. He had $3,200 on mine but I talked him down.

Put a new battery in it last night. She cranks up so fast now. Just need some rear tires in the next few weeks and then on to the fun stuff

Well, I just got the e-brake and battery lights flashing. It looks like I get to replace an alternator this weekend. YAY....It looks straight-forward in terms of replacing.

alternators are a ***** if you have'nt done one before. you gotta move the compressor out of the way and loosen the pulleys as well. some op will say its easy, if you have a lift its alot easier.

a car jacked up on the jackstand and the alternator is easy. i did it the first time on my max about 4 months before i got rid of it to test it, and it was simple. the compressor is 4 bolts, and the alternator is 2 maybe 3 and it's off. but the alternator doesnt die that frequently, from what i know

Easiest way to do t if you got big hands like me... remove radiator and fan assembly loosen tensioner and pulley bolt remove belt rmove electrical connector to alternator along with cable, then unbolt the top bolt first its the long one ,unbolt all 4 ac compressor bolts and.let.it hang, dont worry it wont damage anything, then remove other alternator bolt and let it drop to the ground...istall is a lil tricky trying to hold up the alternator and spinnin a bolt in but once you get it the rest is cake...my first alt install was 2 months ago took me approx 3 hours and thats with fresh coolant new belt alt and radiator.bushings... good luck car looks to be a good chassis for some modding... and dont listen to these people just buy a set of lights from ebay... i got mine wih new.corners for 80bucks shipped and they are NOT depo lights.... tyc and vision are the best companies to get..i got visions and been on.my car for a few months...fitment is perfect

So the car is kinda fixed...The alternator problem wasn't the problem. Someone forgot to put the nut back on the large cable so it had come loose. I was just about to pull the AC compressor off when I noticed this. I had a spare nut to put on and reassembled. My battery and ebrake light are now off.

Now I have a check engine light and some hesitation on the gas. First time this has happened at all. Advance auto scanned it for me and it came back with a misfire in #4. I am going to reset the ECU in the morning just in case it is just a com error from all the battery changing and stuff that we were doing under the hood. If it is still #4 then I will start the coil, spark plug, injector route.

i have big *** hands and removing the radiator and fan assembly is NOT necessary. if you need to remove the plastic covering below the belts and that'll give you more than sufficient space. i swear yall are doing too much on this. first and only time i touched my alternator to take it off to test it, took me no more than 20 minutes to drop it...included removing the passenger tire, removing the belt, etc.
