high rpms in 1st gear(stick shift)

Hey i have a 95 maxima. I just started having this issue today, first of all my check engine light came on. So when I start the car, it starts very roughly, then the rpms will almost drop all the way down(I allways think its gonna stall..its a stick shift btw) but then they come back to normal. But when I put it into 1st gear, the rpms jump to about 16-1800 rpms. It also does this when I put it in reverse. But if I pop it back into neutral the rpms go back to normal.

Also, when im letting out the clutch into 1st, the rpms seem to even out.
Its weird also when I have the clutch IN, when i barley push it into 1st the rpms go up as if I were hitting the gas.

The car still runs fine...this just makes it feel wierd getting out of first gear.
Any suggestions on how to fix or what the problem is?

hard to understand but could be a vacuum leak causing high idle or a MAF going bad causing the fluctuations and rough starts

sorry lol hard to explain.

Pretty much when I have the clutch IN. the rpms are normal
When I pop it into 1st with the clutch still IN, the rpms jump from like 900 to 1800.

also....whats MAF?

Mass air flow sensor. If your CEL(check engine light) came on then do the self diagnosis(in the stickies FAQ's) and see what it says

yup, sounds like a vacuum leak, bad MAF, maybe needs a throttle body cleaning, or bad catalytic converter.. have you checked for codes? also is the rough starting intermittent or every time?

1) Check the codes and report back
2) Clean the MAF, TB, EGR tube, etc.
3) Check for vacuum leaks.
4) ....

I'll bite on this...heres the direct link to how to check your code http://vbxmaxima.8m.com/ecu.html check it and report back...once you get the code, go here http://boredmder.com/ecucodes/index.php and plug the code in to see what it means. You're welcome

Ok I got the code(s).

0707- rear o2 sensor fault
0303 o2 sensor fault
0403- Throtle position sensor
0503- o2 sensor fault

Im pretty sure that throttle position sensor is what is giving me those high rpms, is that a hard fix?

The tps is only 2 bolts...not sure what adjustment it needs after you replace it, but it is very easy to change out. I am gonna bet that if you search for "tps replacement" or something like that, you'll find answers.

Here is a diagram showing where it is

Here is what the tps itself looks like

Ok I fixed the problem with the tps sensor, and the wires were actually disconnected lol.

But now theres a new issue. Ever since those wires came loose and I reconnected them, my rpms arent very stable. Every time i push the clutch in to slow down, the rps will damn near drop to 300, and I can feel the car shake. Could this be from the o2 sensors being out?

My car actually stalled out when I was switching to 2nd gear, cause the rpms dropped all the way. And it seems to not be as bad after I drive for a second. Mostly when I first start it up

check your IACV.

Everytime u put the car in nuetral or shifting, the IACV should open to allow air to flow into the engine while the throttle plate is closed.
