Oil Recommendation For High Mileage 1998 Maxima

Just wondering what some of the gurus here would recommend for a Maxima with 220K. I've been faithful with 3K-3.5K oil changes at the dealer, but I wonder if there's something more I can do oil-wise to make the Maxipanzer last another 220K.

Thanks in advance.

There are several high mileage oils on the market, and any of them will work fine.

Also, it's unnecessary to change your oil that often, unless you beat on it at the drag strip every weekend. I'd recommend having an oil analysis done and it will determine how much life you have left. Modern day oils don't break down and lose their viscosity like oils of 50 years ago did. It has been proven time and time again that 3,000 oil changes nowadays are just marketing advertisements for oil change shops and dealers to get your car in the shop more often so they can make money and upsell you on other things while you're there, such as wiper blades, cabin filters, air filters, tire rotations and balances, and so on.

Everyone will have their own recommendation on what is best . Just stick with a popular name brand and save yourself $30 per oil change and do it yourself. It takes minutes and you shouldn't be doing it every 3k miles, wasting $.

I used to use Castrol GTX 5W30 dino juice, and years ago I argued that anything more was unnecessary.

Flash forward 10 years, I've switched to synth since around 195k. I'm married now and we have 3 cars--the other two use synthetic, so I figured I'd get with the times.

Today, I use whatever synth is on sale (Pennzoil Platinum last time) and a WIX oil filter. I have some Nissan OEM 9E's left, but for whatever reason I like WIX now.....

In all honesty it probably doesn't make a huge difference, it's personal preference. With the newer cars you do have to use what the mfg. requires, such as LL-01, etc.....

I have been using Castrol GTX High Mileage (10W30) for a long time now. No problems, and I'm at 208k now. The formula changed a year or so ago and is now part-synthetic. How much I don't know, I assume it is still mostly conventional oil.

When you switched to synth at 195k did you notice any difference in how it ran? I've considered switching to full-synth, but have been told before that with high mileage cars, stick with whatever it used all along, and I haven't had problems.

I agree it's probably personal preference, and the conv. vs. synth arguments have been going on as long as I can remember.

Ive been using mobil 1 5w30 with a mobil 1 filter for over a year now.. 266k and still running stronger than hell. If only my transmission(s) would hold up as stong as the motor.

Thanks for the replies everyone. In the Arizona heat with lots of stop and go driving and the A/C sucking the life out of your engine like a 4-pack a day habit I've come to realize that all fluid changes are a necessity here to make your cars last, hence the 3-3.5K ritual. My service manager knows me good enough not to try and push a $150 elbow grease shop charge while adjusting the muffler belt.

^I know a number of guys in AZ.........they dont change their oil ever 3k (they do run synthetic)

If you are running synthetic..look at it at 3k, bet its still gold. It's normally hot as ***** here (~100* daily during the summer with extremely high humidity, stop and go is normal for any major city, and my A/C is always on 4)..with that said, I have 3.1k on my current oil change...oil is still gold. Ill change it 5k or 6 months, whichever comes first.

I prefer 10w-40 Mobil 1 Synthetic or Royal Purple 15w-40 if it's available (and affordable). As for a filter I stick to the K&N or Mobil 1 because a friend told me that the Fram and Bosch filters have cardboard in them (didn't research it, went off his good word)

Didn't notice anything....I do have an oil leak/did already....just figured synth is easier on the motor in extreme cold and hot....and the price diff is not huge with 5 qt. jugs....
